GWIS National Research Fellowships Program for International Students in US or Abroad, 2019

Applications are invited for GWIS National Fellowships program to study at any institution in the U.S. or abroad. Applicants of all nationalities are eligible to apply for these fellowships.

The GWIS National Fellowships Program is proud to offer fellowships in 2019 to help increase knowledge in the natural sciences and to encourage research careers in the sciences by women.

GWIS mission is to build a global community to inspire, support, recognize, and empower women in science.

Course Level: Fellowships are available to pursue research.
Study Subject: GWIS Fellowships are intended to provide supplemental funding to women scientists conducting research in the natural sciences.
Scholarship Award: For the 2019-2020 funding cycle, we distributed approximately $50,000 in fellowships funds to six deserving women scientists. Fellowship funds may be used for such things as:

    • expendable supplies
    • small equipment to be used by the recipient (not for general use)
    • publication of research findings
    • travel and subsistence while performing field studies
    • travel to another laboratory for collaborative research

These costs must be clearly justified in the proposal and integral to the research design.

  • Funds cannot be used for the following:
    • salaries
    • tuition
    • child care
    • travel to professional meetings or to begin a new appointment
    • travel to another institution for coursework
    • living allowances
    • equipment for general use
    • indirect costs

Scholarship can be taken in USA or Abroad

Eligibility:

The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for this fellowship:

  • Awards will be made to women holding a degree from a recognized institution of higher learning, of outstanding ability and promise in research, who are performing hypothesis-driven research at any institution in the U.S. or abroad.
  • Career level (e.g. graduate student vs. assistant professor) of the candidate will be taken into consideration when reviewing the proposals.
  • Awards will be made irrespective of race, religion, nationality, creed, national origin, sexual orientation, or age.
  • Application for the GWIS Fellowships is offered at no cost to current GWIS members, as a member benefit. For non-members, an application processing fee of $50 is required. Fellowships applicants that are not already GWIS members may join GWIS with a 6-month introductory membership at a discounted rate of $35. Please note that membership approval can take up to 48 hours, so if you want to become a GWIS member, please do so (ideally) at least a week before the Fellowships deadline.
  • Financial need of research funding is a requirement for the application. No project that has already been fully funded will be eligible for the awards. All pending funding sources must be listed in the application and reviewers will consider these when assessing the financial need of the project.

Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are eligible to apply for these fellowships.

College Admission Requirement

Entrance Requirements: Awards will be made to women holding a degree from a recognized institution of higher learning, of outstanding ability and promise in research, who are performing hypothesis-driven research at any institution in the U.S. or abroad.

English language Requirements: Applicants from outside the home country will often need to meet specific English language/other language requirements in order to be able to study there.

How to Apply: Checklist: (Note: checklist should not be submitted with application)

  • Application Form – Note there is a 45-minute timeout on the application form page, so we recommend you prepare the answers to longer questions ahead of time in a separate word processor.
  • A single PDF containing (Note there is a 30 MB size limit):
    • Abstract of the proposed project (written for a non-specialist; maximum of 200 words, 12 point font, margins at least 0.75 inches).
    • Project Description. The description must be sufficient to allow a reviewer familiar with the general area of the work to evaluate the underlying hypothesis and the methods to be used in the experimental approach. Descriptions should include: a testable hypothesis, specific aims, significance of the project to the applicant’s field of study, broad account of experimental techniques and methods to be used to test the hypothesis, including innovative approaches, a brief account of background and preliminary data, some discussion of the expected results, their interpretation, and potential problems. This section must not exceed four typed pages, excluding references and figures. If applicants wish to include figures within the main section, they will count towards the four-page limit. The description MUST be typed and with a size no smaller than 12 point font. Descriptions may be single or double-spaced. Margins should be at least 0.75 inches. More than 4 pages, too small type, photocopy reductions, or “cut-and-paste” to squeeze more material will disqualify an application.
    • Proposed Budget and Budget Justification. Fellowships funds may be used for such things as:
      • expendable supplies
      • small equipment to be used by the recipient (not for general use)
      • publication of research findings
      • travel and subsistence while performing field studies
      • travel to another laboratory for collaborative research
      • payment for undergraduate assistants (NOT to exceed 1/3 of the total budget requested)
      • study subjects compensation

Fellowship funds cannot be used for:

      • salaries
      • tuition
      • childcare
      • travel to professional meetings or to begin a new appointment
      • travel to another institution for coursework
      • training or workshops
      • administrative overhead or indirect costs
      • personal computers
      • living allowances
  • Award amounts will not exceed $10,000 or specified funds requested in the proposed budget. Any application that submits a budget request in excess of $10,000 (even $1.00 over) is disqualified.
    • Copies of Animal/Human Subjects Approval OR Collecting Permits. Please scan these items and append to your application.
    • A letter from the host scientist. If you are asking for funds to travel to another laboratory for collaborative research, please include a letter from the host scientist to provide evidence of this collaboration.
  • Recommendations Letters. Two letters, one from an advisor or department head plus one other who is qualified to evaluate the applicant’s ability to perform the proposed research are required. An electronic signature should be included if at all possible. Please ask referees to submit their letters by January 4, 2019.  While recommendation letters will continue to be accepted through11:59 pm, Eastern Standard Time, January 11, 2019, they advise you to strongly suggest your referees to submit their letters by the earlier date to ensure we receive those letters in time.
  • Contact Information for Institutional Official to manage your grant expenses if awarded. If you should be awarded a fellowship, you will be asked for the Annual Expense Report in May 2019. Note that this information will be included in the application form.

Application Deadline: The application deadline for all GWIS Fellowships applications will be 11:59 pm, Eastern Standard Time, January 11, 2019.
