Hamer Scholarships for Language Study in China, Indonesia, Japan and Korea, 2014

The Victorian Government is awarding Hamer scholarships for Australian citizens or permanent residents and residents of Victoria. Scholarships are awarded each year to undertake intensive language study at nominated universities or institutions in China, Indonesia, Japan and Korea. Scholarships are worth $10,000 each for China and Indonesia or $15,000 each for Japan and Korea. The scholarships are to undertake a minimum of one to two semester study duration (minimum five to six months) at one of the institutions nominated in those countries. The application deadline is 21 September 2014.

Eligibility: To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship candidates must be:
-aged 21 or above
-Australian citizens or permanent residents and residents of Victoria, (Victorians living, working or studying in China, Indonesia, Japan and Korea may also be considered, however preference will be given to those currently residing in Victoria)
-candidates can only apply for a Hamer Scholarship for study at one of the nominated institutions.
-not in receipt of any other concurrent grant, funding or scholarship for study in any of the countries.
-keen to become fully immersed into the Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese or Korean culture and way of life.
-Note: existing language skills are not compulsory however preference will be given to candidates with some existing language skills.

Scholarship Open for International Students: Australian citizens or permanent residents and residents of Victoria can apply for these Hamer scholarships.

Scholarship Description: Victorian GovernmentAs part of the Victorian International Engagement Strategy the Victorian Government has established the Hamer Scholarships, a language and cultural immersion program designed to build the Asia-engagement capabilities of Victorians and help strengthen cultural awareness between Victoria and Asia. The program provides scholarships for Victorians each year to undertake intensive language study at nominated universities or institutions in China, Indonesia, Japan and Korea.

Number of award(s):
-China: up to 50 scholarships per year
-Indonesia: up to 50 scholarships per year
-Japan: up to 30 scholarships per year
-Korea: up to 30 scholarships per year

Duration of award(s): The scholarships are to undertake a minimum of one to two semester study duration (minimum five to six months) at one of the institutions nominated in those countries.

What does it cover? Worth $10,000 each for China and Indonesia, or $15,000 each for Japan and Korea, the scholarships are a boost for Asia-focused skill sets and will create business, cultural and educational representatives for Victoria in those countries. The scholarship is to be used for language study related expenses only, including:
-international air travel to and from the elected country
-accommodation and living expenses
-compulsory comprehensive medical and travel insurance
-tuition and related fees
-text books and other study materials
-other study-related out-of-pocket expenses while in the elected country.

Selection Criteria:
-candidate has provided a clear study plan and timeline
-candidate has provided an approximate outline of how funds will be spent
-candidate has provided a compelling case outlining how the scholarship will benefit their future study and/or career path and organisation
-candidate has provided a compelling case outlining how, by undertaking the scholarship, this will benefit Victoria
-candidate has provided evidence of being able to cope in a foreign environment and
-candidate has demonstrated a clear commitment to using the language skills in the future
-candidates applying for study in Indonesia must include some form of extra tutoring or language classes in addition to University class time in order to total 15-20 hours of formal study time per week. Candidates must include the additional formal study hours in application study plan and cost breakdown (Candidates studying at the University of Indonesia in Jakarta can apply for evening classes with the Indonesia Australia Language Foundation)
-Hamer Scholarships are only available for language study at nominated institutions and universities. Study duration must be at least five months. Applications that do not meet this criterion will automatically be deemed ineligible.

Notification: Successful applications will be shortlisted and notified by email/phone to participate in an interview with the Hamer Scholarship Selection Panel. Unsuccessful applicants will be notified by email. Successful applicants will be notified by email/phone and will be sent a formal Letter of Acceptance.
