The Human Rights Essay Award for Worldwide Lawyers

Eligibility

  • Eligible Countries: All nationalities
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: Only participants with a law degree Juris Doctor (J.D.), Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), or equivalent by the submission due date are eligible to enter the competition.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following/given criteria:
  • No matter where they are from, lawyers from all around the world are eligible for these awards.
  • Shall have a demonstrated experience or interest in international human rights law.

How to Apply

Applicants must have the flexibility to choose any subject related to Topic 2023: “Equality and Human Rights: Confronting Racial Discrimination.”

  • How to Apply: To apply, applicants must choose a subject on the topic chosen by the Academy for each particular year. Applicants will have the flexibility to choose any subject related to the substantive law relevant to the field.
  • Essays must be submitted using the online submission form.
  • Submission Requirement: All the following rules must be followed by the applicants:
  • The essays must be at most 35 pages, including footnotes.
  • Applicants must use Times New Roman font, 12-point double-spaced for the essay’s body.
  • For the essay’s footnotes, candidates must use Times New Roman font, 10-point single-spaced. If they have questions on the proper usage of footnotes, consult the “The Uniform System of Citation: The Bluebook.”
  • Character spacing must be normal with 1-inch (2.54 cm) margins.
  • All essays must be on letter-size paper (8.5 x 11 inches/21.59 x 27.94 cm). Do not use other sizes!
  • The essay must be a legal document and contain extensive research and legal analysis; therefore, it will include substantial foot pages and citations.
  • Supporting Documents: Each applicant must include a curriculum vitae (CV)/resume of no more than three pages explaining their experience or interest in human rights issues. Submit the CV as a separate file from your essay.
  • Additional Requirements: Essays written by two or more people are not accepted!
  • Language Requirement: Applicants must submit an unpublished legal essay in English or Spanish written solely by that person.

Benefits

The selected winners will obtain a certificate that accredits them as such, which can be obtainable to any organization or educational institution if the receiver considers it important. The Award will be the publication of the essays in The American University International Law Review (AUILR).
