ICSSR Doctoral, Postdoctoral and Senior Fellowships for Indian Scholars in India, 2018-19

The Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) is calling applications for doctoral, postdoctoral senior fellowships for 2018-2019. Fellowship is available for Indian scholars.

The main objective of ICSSR Postdoctoral Fellowship is to encourage and retain young Indian social science scholars who have completed their PhD and who wish to pursue a regular career in teaching and research. Senior Fellowships are awarded to outstanding Indian Social Scientists for conducting full-time research on themes and issues of national and social concerns.

Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) was established in the year of 1969 by the Government of India to promote research in social sciences in the country. The Council aims to review the progress of social science research and give advice to its users.

Scholarship Description: 

  • Applications Deadline: Last date for online submission of applications is August 14, 2018, and a hard copy of the same should reach ICSSR latest by 21st August 2018.
  • Course Level: Fellowships are available to pursue Doctoral, Postdoctoral and Senior Fellowship.
  • Study Subject: The proposals should be in the field of social science disciplines or may be interdisciplinary in nature.
  • Scholarship Award: Doctoral Fellowships:

A) Centrally Administered Doctoral Fellowship

  • Doctoral Fellowship is a full-time research work.
  • The duration of the fellowship is strictly for two years.
  • The value of the fellowship is Rs.16,000/- p.m. and contingency grant is Rs.15,000 /-p.a.

B) Institutional Doctoral Fellowship

The duration and value of fellowship will be the same as mentioned under the Centrally Administered Doctoral Fellowship.

C) Short-Term Doctoral Fellowship

  • The duration of the Short Term Doctoral Fellowship is strictly for six months.
  • The value of fellowship is Rs.16,000/- per month plus Contingency Grant of Rs.7,500 /- for the duration of the Fellowship.

D) Contingency Grant

This is a one-time grant not exceeding Rs. 50,000/-.

Postdoctoral Fellowship: The value of the fellowship is Rs.28,000 p.m. and contingency grant is Rs.20,000/-p.a.

Senior Fellowships: The value of the fellowship for unemployed and superannuated scholars is Rs.40, 000 p.m. and contingency grant is Rs.40, 000/-p.a. irrespective of the pensionary benefit.

Eligibility for the Scholarship: 

Eligible Countries: Fellowship is available for Indian scholars.

Entrance Requirements: Applicants must meet the following criteria:

Doctoral Fellowships:

A) Centrally Administered Doctoral Fellowship

3.1 The candidates must have confirmed PhD registration (Research Degree Committee (RDC) approved) at any of the institutions mentioned at 1.1 above on the last date of application.

3.2 Minimum 50% marks in Graduation and 55% in Post-Graduation or equivalent grades in any Social Science disciplines. Five per cent (5%) relaxation of marks will be given to the SC/ST candidates;

3.3 NET/SLET/M Phil from a recognized university or the candidates who are registered after qualifying Research Entrance Test (RET) conducted by a university;

3.4 The scholar should not be more than 40 years of age on the last date of application. There shall be an age relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST/Persons with benchmark disability candidates;

3.5 Candidates who have already availed UGC Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)/Rajiv Gandhi Doctoral Fellowship (RGDF)/ Maulana Azad Doctoral Fellowship (MADF)/ICSSR/ICAR/CSIR/ ICPR/ICMR/ICHR awardees are not eligible to apply.

B) Institutional Doctoral Fellowship

3.6 All conditions of the Centrally Administered Doctoral Fellowship (3.1 to 3.5) would apply to Institutional Doctoral Fellowship, which is administered through the ICSSR Research Institutes.

C) Short Term Fellowship

3.7 A doctoral student who has not availed ICSSR or any other fellowship (refer 3.5 above) and completed at least two years of research work for Ph. D. Degree at any of the institutions mentioned at 1.1 above is eligible to apply for Short-term Fellowship.

D) Contingency Grant

3.8 This is a one-time grant awarded to a registered Ph. D. scholar at any of the institutions mentioned at 1.1 above, who is at an advanced stage of his/her research work, and not availed ICSSR or any other fellowship (refer 3.5 above) is eligible to apply for Contingency Grant for the purpose of field trip, stationery and computer-related expenses.

Postdoctoral Fellowship:

2.1 The scholar should not be more than 45 years of age on the last date of application. There shall be an age relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST/Persons with Benchmark Disability candidates;

2.2 The scholar must possess a PhD degree in any of the social science disciplines at the time of application.

2.3 A fellow is required to affiliate himself/herself to an ICSSR Research Institute/ institutes of national importance as approved by MHRD/ government research institutes/ UGC recognized Indian university including deemed university/college having approved PhD programme and requisite research infrastructure of his/her choice. Funds are disbursed through the affiliating/administering institution.

2.4 Faculties with regular service in publicly funded universities/colleges and research institutes getting UGC pay-scales may be considered for pay protection in exceptionally meritorious cases to be decided by the Expert Committees of the ICSSR.

2.5 The selected fellow has to work under the guidance of a senior social scientist (not below Associate Professor with sufficient research supervision, experience and publications). The supervisor should not be superannuated and be in employment at the affiliating institution in the same discipline as that of the applicant. In the case of inter-disciplinary proposals, the supervisor should have proven expertise in the area of research proposed by the scholar. The selection of the supervisor is subject to the approval of the ICSSR.

Senior Fellowships:

2.1 The scholar should not be less than 45 and more than 70 years of age on the last date of application.

2.2 The scholar must possess a PhD degree in any of the social science disciplines with outstanding research publications at the time of application.

2.3 Senior government and defence officers (not less than 25 years of regular service) and persons with proven Social Science expertise possessing a Ph. D. degree in any social science disciplines and demonstrable research experience through publications of books/research papers/reports can also apply.

2.4 A fellow is required to affiliate himself/ herself to an ICSSR Research Institute/ institutes of national importance as approved by MHRD/ government research institute/ UGC recognized Indian university including deemed university of his/her choice. Funds are disbursed through the affiliating/administering institution.

Application Procedure: 

How to Apply: After submitting an online application, a hard copy of the same, along with all enclosures, must be sent to: In-charge, RFS Division, Indian Council of Social Science Research, Aruna Asaf Ali Marg, New Delhi 110067 before the last date duly signed and stamped by the affiliating institution.

  1. It is required to log in to apply for any programme/grant.
  2. To log in, use “Login for Applicant” link given on the top.
  3. New applicant needs to register.
  4. A confirmation mail will be sent to the given email ID for activation of the account. In case you do not find the mail in your Inbox then check SPAM folder.
  5. After clicking on the link given in the email, the account will get activated and you can log in to your account and apply.
  6. Enter your email ID as the username in the login form.
  7. Links to various applications are given on the left side.
  8. Fill all the fields given in the form and upload required documents in PDF format with the application.
  9. You can view your application through Dashboard, which will be accessible after login.
  10. Take print out of your application given in PDF format in the Dashboard.
  11. On the cover of envelop superscript the programme/grant type, you are applying.
  12. Send the printout of the application along with the photocopy of all the documents as specified in the guidelines, by post, to our office address – Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), JNU Institutional Area, Aruna Asaf Ali Marg, New Delhi – 110067.
