IIT Bombay New Graduate Design Course By IDC

The Industrial Design Centre or IDC, the premier design institute of IIT Bombay, is all set to introduce a new four-year bachelor degree in design called, B. Des, from the upcoming academic year 2015-16.

It is focusing to attract design enthusiastic students to pursue a degree in design after completing their intermediate classes.

According to officials, it is the first time in the history of IDC that it has made available Design degree programs for undergraduate students. Till date, the institute was only focusing on offering specialization courses in visual communication, industrial design, interaction design, animation, vehicle design and mobility and all such courses are only accessible to post graduate students.

On the launch of this new course, the Head of IDC, Professor BK Chakravarthy stated that the institute is very excited in offering such courses along with its PhD and Masters programs in design and adding such Bachelor degree in the list would make the design practice and academics more rigorous than ever before.

He further emphasized, “As we progress from the Knowledge Economy towards Creative Economy, there is an increasing need in India for skilled professionals in the area of design. Design can play a crucial role in the development of the nation and work towards improvement of quality of life for all”.

The authorities confirmed that an integrated five-year dual degree program has also been launched, combining Bachelor and Master Degree together, however students will only be eligible to opt for such degree after completing their third year in B. Des.

From 10th of April 2015, online registration for the new course will begin and students need to undergo an Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED) for admission to B. Des. To become eligible for the course the students have to pass their Class XII or equivalent exams in 2014-15 academic sessions.

The entrance examination will be organized on 31st of May 2015 across nine major cities including, Pune, Mumbai, Guwahati, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Kolkatta, Bengaluru and Chennai.

Eligibility Criteria

Qualification: The students should have passed Class XII or equivalent examination in 2014-15 to enroll for the course or appeared or passed in 2015 for Class 12 or equivalent exam. Students who have already passed their Class XII examination or equivalent examination in 2013 or earlier will not be permitted to enroll for the program.

Age limit:  General and OBC Category Students born on or after 1st October 1995 are eligible for the course, while ST, SC and PWD Category Students born on or after 1st October, 1990 are considered eligible.

Selection procedure: All the selection will be done on the basis of student’s performance in their Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design 2015.
