Eligibility

  • Eligible Countries: Students from the Netherlands and other international countries are eligible to apply.
  • Eligible Course or Subjects: Candidates can apply for the PhD degree in the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences
  • Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following/given criteria:
  • Candidates should hold a (Research) Master’s degree in human geography, urban and regional planning, urban studies and/or international development studies, or a closely related field. Preference will be given to participants with experience across more than one of the aforementioned disciplines.

How to Apply

  • How to Apply: In order to apply, interested applicants must submit online application form.
  • Supporting Documents: The students are required to present the following documents to the university:
  • Curriculum vitae including contact details for two references;
  • Letter of motivation (max 750 words);
  • Research statement where you share your first ideas on how you would approach the project including suggestions for relevant (and feasible, given your experience and skills) case study cities in the Global North and South (max 500 words);
  • Writing sample in English (e.g., an article, chapter of thesis, book chapter, or assignment).
  • Admission Requirements: The applicants must have completed PhD in political science or one of the related social sciences.
  • Language Requirement: The students must submit scores of the following English language proficiency tests:
  • TOEFL PBT – 600
  • IELTS – 7.0
  • TOEFL IBT – 100

Benefits

The University of Amsterdam will appoint the selected candidates at the postdoctoral position with a salary will be €2541 gross per month in the first year and will increase to €3247 in the final year, based on full-time employment and in keeping with the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities. They additionally offer an extensive package of secondary benefits, including 8% holiday allowance and a year-end bonus of 8.3%.
