The Social Science Research Council offers Mellon Mays Predoctoral Research Grants in the USA. Fellowships are open for applicants who have been selected as Mellon Mays Fellows as undergraduates. Fellows may apply for one grant per year and must be enrolled in a doctoral program. The application deadline is November 1, 2014.

Study Subject(s): Scholarships are provided in the field of Anthropology and Archaeology, Area/Cultural/Ethnic/Gender Studies, Art History, Classics, Computer Science, Geography and Population Studies, Earth/Environmental/Geological Science and Ecology, English, Film, Cinema and Media Studies (theoretical focus), Musicology and Ethnomusicology, Foreign Languages and Literature, History, Linguistics, Literature, Mathematics, Oceanographic/Marine/Atmospheric/Planetary Science, Performance Studies (theoretical focus), Philosophy and Political Theory, Physics and Astronomy, Religion and Theology, Sociology, Theater (non-performance focus)and Interdisciplinary Studies.

Eligibility: Fellows may apply for one grant per year
-Must be a Mellon fellow enrolled in a doctoral program
-We consider August 1, 2014 to be the beginning of the 2014– 2015 academic year
-Total of $5,000 in GSE and PRD funds; DCG grant money is not applied towards this total
-Cannot be used for tuition and fees or living expenses
-Disbursed on a first come, first served basis until funds are exhausted
-If accepted, grants take 5-6 weeks to process

Fellows may apply for one grant per year and must be enrolled in a doctoral program in one of the fields listed below or have filed a petition for inclusion of another field. What does it cover? *Graduate Studies Enhancement (GSE) Grant
-2nd – 5th graduate years
-Fellows that have begun the 6th year of graduate study are not eligible
-Students at South African universities are eligible to apply in their 1st graduate year
-Travel, equipment, books, journal subscriptions, and software
-$1,500 annual maximum
-May be received up to 4 times
*Pre-doctoral Research Development (PRD) Grant
-2nd – 5th graduate years
-Fellows that have begun the 6th year of graduate study are not eligible
-Students at South African universities are eligible to apply in their 1st graduate year
-Small scale, preliminary research and other activities
-$3,000 maximum
-One time grant
-Letter of support from an advisor or committee member who is familiar with your research
*Dissertation Completion Grant (DCG)
-Travel, equipment, books, journal subscriptions, and software that supports the completion of the dissertation
-Fellows must provide a feasible timeline for completion of dissertation within 12 months and be in their 6th year or beyond
-$2,500 maximum
-One time grant
-Summary report six months following the award is required
