The Newberry Library offers both short-term fellowships of one to two months and long-term fellowships of four to twelve months. The award is $2,000 per month for most short-term fellowships. The stipends for long term fellowships are $4,200 per month. Study Subject (s): The fellowship provides access to the Newberry’s collection. The Newberry’s Core Collection concerns the civilizations of Western Europe and the Americas from the late Middle Ages to the twenty-first century. Particular collection strengths include: American History and Culture, American Indian and Indigenous Studies, Chicago and the Midwest, Genealogy and Local History, History of the Book, Manuscripts and Archives, Maps, Travel, and Exploration, Medieval, Renaissance, and Early Modern Studies, Music and Religion.
Course Level: Long-term fellowships are available to postdoctoral scholars (except the École Nationale des Chartes Exchange Fellowship) who want to be in residence at the Newberry for periods of four to twelve months. Scholarship Description: Fellowships at the Newberry provide support for researchers who wish to use our collection. The Newberry administers annual competitions for both Short-Term Fellowships of one to two months and Long-Term Fellowships of four to twelve months. Most short-term fellowships are restricted to individuals who live outside the Chicago area and are primarily intended to assist researchers who need to examine specific items in the Newberry’s collection. Long-term fellowships are generally available without regard to an applicant’s place of residence and are intended to support significant works of scholarship that draw on the strengths of the Newberry’s collection.

Duration of award(s): The tenure of short-term fellowships is one continuous month, unless otherwise noted. Scholars who have an extensive need for use of the collections may request two months of fellowship support. Long term fellowships are awarded for periods of four to twelve months. Awardees must indicate in their applications how many months they intend to be in residence at the Newberry.

Selection Criteria: The Newberry considers three primary criteria for Newberry Library Fellowships:
-The significance of the proposed project
-The applicant’s ability to complete the proposed project
-The appropriateness of the proposed project to the Newberry’s collection
Notification:
Long-term: notified by mid-March.
Short-term: notified by mid-May.
How to Apply: All application materials must be submitted together electronically through the Newberry Library website. Applicants must complete the Information Webform with attachments of the applicant’s Abstract, Project Description, and CV. Letters of reference are submitted by the letter writers, through the Letter of Reference Webform. Letters cannot be submitted as an attachment to the applicant’s other materials.
Scholarship Application Deadline: The application deadline for short term fellowship is January 15, 2014 and for long term fellowship is December 1, 2013.
