Job Description: The Fellowship was created under the Will of the late Norman Cunningham of Auckland. Its purpose is to promote research in animal welfare and/or veterinary science particularly related to the breeding, the health or the control of diseases of thoroughbred racehorses in New Zealand.

The Director of Research and Commercialisation, and the Director of Postgraduate Studies, Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences at Massey University and the President, New Zealand Veterinary Association, are the Scientific Directors under the Trust and are responsible among other things for election and supervision of Fellows.

Applications are now invited from those interested in being elected to a Fellowship in the next year.

1. The applicant must be a resident of New Zealand and a veterinary surgeon registered under the Veterinary Surgeons Act, 1994 and its amendments, or a graduate in another field of science who is interested in animal welfare.

2. The total grant under the Fellowship will be up to $10,000 per annum (for 2007, $2,700 is available). The whole or part of this may be applied as stipend or for other purposes that will enable the Fellow to carry out a defined programme approved by the Directors.

3. The programme approved under the Fellowship shall be completed within three (3) years. Reports of progress shall be made at intervals of six months after appointment and a final report submitted within three months of the termination.

4. Application forms are available from the Research and Postgraduate Studies Office, IVABS, and should be submitted to the Graduate Research School.

Recommendations from the Director of Research, the Director of Postgraduate Studies and the President of the New Zealand Veterinary Association, together with the applications, will then be submitted to the Guardian Trust Office, Trust and Financial Services Manager of the Norman Cunningham Fellowship, P O Box 9, Christchurch 8015. When the Guardian Trust Office confirms the recommendation, the Fellowship shall be awarded by the Executive of the Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences.
