One PhD Scholarship in Development Economics or Agricultural Economics at the University of Goettingen
There is one PhD scholarship (1/2 TVL E13, research position) funded by the newly-built Courant Research Center “Poverty, Inequality and Growth in Developing Countries” at the University of Goettingen, Germany. This center is mainly focusing on the broad issues in developing and transition economies. This PhD position is expected to closely work with the Junior Research Group ‘Agricultural Economics/Rural Development’, and other members in the center as well, while fulfilling the requirements for the PhD degree (Economics, Agricultural Economics or Statistics). The funding will cover at least three years or until this person complete his PhD degree. The basic requirements include: • A master (or Diploma in Germany) degree in agricultural economics, economics, statistics, business management, mathematics or other closely-related fields; • Good ability and motivation to acquire quantitative and statistical methods; • Good oral and written command of both English and German language; (Our working language is English). • Strong research passion on broad issues, such as, poverty and inequality in developing countries, in particular, in African, Asian, and Eastern European countries; • Pursuing a career of academic professions after completing the Ph.D. degree. The selection would depend on the candidate’s research potential and the research proposal. The research topics include, but do not limit in: • Consumer behaviors, food safety and nutritional status • Agricultural production, efficiency and technological innovations Risk share and contracts in agricultural economics • Price transmissions in space and time • Environment, resource use and economic growth • Demographic changes, health and economic development • Applied econometrics. 5. Development Project Officer Oxford Committee for Famine Relief (OXFAM)in the Red Sea Province, for six months, 1986. The Officer was working with pastoralists Beja ethnic group in the Red Sea Province, Sudan. Responsibility is to see OXFAM rehabilitation and development projects in the Red Sea Area. These
responsibilities envisaged as:
a. A Government restocking project in a pilot area. The Officer evaluated the project and directed research to see it is applicability to other areas of the Province and implements if possible and suggests other forms of follow – up.
b. To see the possibility of various small projects in agro-pastoral area with forest resources. The officer directed and participated in continuing research and implementation of projects.
c. Low technology water projects, the officer implemented a dry stone well lining projects and looked for possibilities of appropriate water resources.
d. The Officer has managed a Vitamin A distribution project in conjunction with the Ministry of Health, and UNICEF.
6. Worked in a number of grassroots development projects of the Area Development Schemes (ADS), funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in the Sudan, 1988 – 1992.

I did my MSc thesis research work on tropical rangeland assessment and evaluation at Alemaya University, Ethiopia. Before joining Hawassa University as an academic staff, I worked in Ethiopian Agricultural Research Institute as a researcher. In my involvement in different research activities, I had been able to publish five articles on refereed journals and eleven articles in conference proceedings. Pastoral systems being one of the most important farming systems in Ethiopia, I am highly interested to pursue my doctoral study on the analysis of pastoral grazing management systems and the ecology of bush encroachment (and impact of climate change on livestock production). Yet I can also gladly work on other aspects of livestock sciences. I am, therefore, kindly asking you to allow me to undertake my higher study under your supervision.
