In the varied collection of courses, edX has introduced another online course i.e. “International Human Rights” in association with Louvain School. This course will help the students to study the relational perception of International Human Rights Law. This law protects the individual from both private and public power.

Human rights, the elementary rights and freedoms to which all individuals are authorized, frequently meant to embrace the right to life and liberty, freedom of thought, expression and equality before law. These are expanded through the continuous interaction between the domestic courts and international human rights bodies.

This course will provide the students an opportunity to discuss and question about the human rights. Examination of the human rights’ sources, mechanism of protection and the rights of individuals and duties of states are also the learning sections of this course.

Miscellaneous topics are included in this course for the students to gain the knowledge of human rights in employment relationships, human rights in the context of the fight against terrorism, religious freedom in multicultural societies or economic and social rights in development.

Duration of Course

The session will start in February 2014.

Eligibility

No prerequisites required, but prior familiarity with international law is a positive feature.

About the Instructor

Olivier De Schutter

He is the professor at UCL in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium and at the College of Europe (Natolin). Since May 2008 he is United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to food. He is also a visiting professor in various universities including University of Columbia. He has also experienced the EU network of Independent Experts on Fundamental Rights in 2002-2006.
