University of Amsterdam is inviting application for a PhD position in Neuroscience at Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (SILS) in the Faculty of Science. The PhD candidate should have a strong expertise in experimental neuroscience at the cellular and circuit level, and should have experience in working with animals. The candidate is expected to have excellent communication and social skills, writing skills, and a strong desire to study brain diseases. The PhD candidate is also expected to assist in teaching of undergraduates. Based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week) the gross monthly salary will range from €2,083 in the first year to €2,664 in the last year. The application deadline is 16 October 2014.

Eligibility:
University is seeking for an excellent and highly motivated candidate with an MSc degree in neuroscience and a strong affinity to the biology of astrocytes and neuron-astrocyte communication in disease.
-The PhD candidate should have a strong expertise in experimental neuroscience at the cellular and circuit level, and should have experience in working with animals. The candidate is expected to have excellent communication and social skills, writing skills, and a strong desire to study brain diseases. Analytical skills and experimental talent are essential. The general requirements are a thorough knowledge of molecular, cellular, and systems neuroscience. The ideal candidate has experience with astrocyte biology, electrophysiology and Alzheimer animal models, and has a license to work with animals.

Scholarship Description: University of Amsterdam The PhD candidate will be part of a team that aims to elucidate fundamental molecular mechanisms and functional electrophysiological changes in glia in brain disease. The project is focused on reactive gliosis in Alzheimer disease. The main aim is to determine the changes in reactive astrocytes and the consequences for neuronal circuits in a mouse model for Alzheimer’s disease.

Number of award(s): One PhD position is available.

Duration of award(s): The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of 4 years (initial appointment will be for a period of 18 months and after satisfactory evaluation it can be extended for a total duration of 4 years) and should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). An educational plan will be drafted that includes attendance of courses and (international) meetings. The PhD candidate is also expected to assist in teaching of undergraduates.

What does it cover? Based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week) the gross monthly salary will range from €2,083 in the first year to €2,664 in the last year. The Collective Employment Agreement (CAO) of the Dutch Universities is applicable.
