Cardiff is established as one of Britain’s leading universities. Its ambition is to be among the top 100 universities in the world and top 20 in the UK.

Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a minimum of an upper second-class honours degree (2:1) or European equivalent and a Masters in Chemistry, Biochemistry or a related discipline. Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent).

Eligibility

  • The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for the scholarship:
  • A First or Upper Second class UK honours degree, or equivalent is required.
  • Successful applicants to the programme will also have demonstrated a strong performance at Master’s level in a subject related to Applied Linguistics, will have completed a course in research methods, and will have some experience of conducting empirical research (possibly as part of the Master’s degree).

  • This studentship is open to students of any nationality. Students classified as international for fee purposes have to self-fund the difference between home and international fees.

Benefits

Four studentships are very generously funded by the AHSS College (Tess Fitzpatrick Serious Brain Power fund). These studentships will consist of UK/EU fee in years 2, 3 and 4 of the 6-year programme. Overseas students will need to fund the difference between the Home/EU fee and the overseas fee. In the course of their PhD candidacy, postgraduate research students may apply for funding up to £1250 over a period of the 6-year PhD candidature with an annual maximum of £600. PhD students also have access to a Research, Innovation, Workshop and Network Fund to fund professional development and employability; to support emerging group/networking initiatives; organising workshops and symposia that align with the research profile of the School. There are additional travels bursaries available to students registered on this programme.
