To develop advanced fatigue analysis methods and tools for metallic railway bridges through experimental and analytical studies, the University of Surrey has established the PhD Project in Advanced fatigue analysis of metallic railway bridges for the academic year 2022-2023.

The project is a 3-year studentship partially funded by Network Rail. It is entitled to cover the academic fees for UK/EU students and provide them with a stipend of £16,500 per annum to cover their living expenses. Students that hold an MEng/BEng/MSc in Civil/Structural/Mechanical/Aeronautical/Automotive Engineering with a UK equivalent 2:1 classification or above and have relevant skills will be considered.

Eligibility

  • Eligible Countries: All UK and EU nationals are eligible to apply.
  • Eligible Course or Subjects: Students can apply for the Civil and Environmental Engineering PhD programme offered at the University of Surrey.
  • Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following/given criteria:
  • The applicants must have skills in numerical (FE) modelling of structures and/or MATLAB are desirable, as is an understanding of fatigue/fracture in metallic structures.

  • Supporting Documents: Applicants are required to send a cover letter explaining their interest in the project, a CV with relevant qualifications and prior expertise in areas relevant to the project, transcripts and the names and contact details of two referees, one of them being from an individual with good knowledge of the applicant’s academic record, especially in projects/dissertations.
  • Admission Requirements: The applicants must possess an MEng/BEng/MSc in Civil/Structural/Mechanical/Aeronautical/Automotive Engineering with a UK equivalent 2:1 classification or above.
