PhD Studentship in Renewable Energy at Cardiff University in UK, 2015

Cardiff University is inviting application for a PhD studentship in Renewable Energy for a research project on “Frequency Support from Offshore Wind Farms”. PhD studentship is open to UK nationals and EU students who can satisfy UK residency requirements. To be eligible for the full award, EU Nationals must have been in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of the course for which they are seeking funding, including for the purposes of full-time education. This studentship consists of full UK/EU tuition fees, as well as a Doctoral Stipend matching UK Research Council National Minimum (£13,863 p.a. for 2014/15, updated each year). The deadline for all applications is 3 November 2014.

Eligibility:
-Residency: Full awards (fees plus maintenance stipend) are open to UK Nationals and EU students who can satisfy UK residency requirements. To be eligible for the full award, EU Nationals must have been in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of the course for which they are seeking funding, including for the purposes of full-time education. EU Nationals who do not meet the above residency requirement are eligible for a fees only award, provided that they have been ordinarily resident in the EU for at least 3 years prior to the start of their proposed programme of study.
-Academic criteria: Applicants for a studentship must have obtained, or be about to obtain, a first class honurs degree or good 2.1 and/or an appropriate Master’s level qualification (or their equivalent) in a relevant subject.

Scholarship Open for International Students: Students of UK/EU can apply for this PhD studentship.

Scholarship Description: cardiff university Due to the increase in offshore wind generation, transmission system operators are concerned over the ability of wind farms to provide ancillary services. In particular, there has been concern over their capability to provide dynamic frequency support upon sudden disturbances in the grid frequency. In this research project, mathematical modelling will be carried out to represent offshore wind farms for frequency support provision. The model will take into account wind speed variations between different wind turbines in the wind farm. GH Bladed will be employed to represent the wind turbine aerodynamic response and rotor dynamics. System modelling will be carried out in DIgSILENT. An algorithm that coordinates the frequency support of individual turbines and of the wind farm as a whole will be verified through computer simulations. The concept will be validated experimentally and in real time using laboratory equipment available in Cardiff University (electric machines, HVDC test-rig, and RTDS). These items will be used to build an experimental platform. The algorithm will be implemented in a comprehensive GB model (facilitated by National Grid) for further verifications.

Number of award(s): One PhD studentship is offered.
