Scholarship Description Two full-time PhD Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarships (MQRES) are available in the Department of Physics and Astronomy associated with successful ARC project DP110102754. Only one of these scholarships is available to a suitably qualified international student.
We have recently proved the enormous potential of a deep ultraviolet laser based on cerium-doped laser crystals – a relatively new widely tunable solid state laser material that has been called the “Ti:Sapphire of the UV”. We have now been awarded a major grant to develop a completely new ultrafast laser platform based on cerium, capable of generating few-femtosecond pulses in the ultraviolet. A UV source of this kind will drive new applications in fields such as attosecond science, plasma physics, and ultrafast chemistry.
