About This Course

Understanding the sources of a conflict is the first step towards solving it. Many conflicts in the world today are framed in terms of religion, but there is much discussion and confusion concerning the precise role religion plays in these conflicts. According to some, conflict and violence are inherent to religion. Others claim that religion is only the guise under which social, economic or political conflicts are fought out. The first step to solving religiously framed conflicts is understanding the role of religion in them, and that is what this free online course is about.

This is a free online course. This MOOC will be offered with Video Transcripts in English.  Participants will receive a certificate upon completion of the course.

This Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) will offer a critical view on one of the most urgent problems in today’s society: the different roles that religion plays in conflict situations. The aim of this course is to show how a religiously framed conflict can be studied in the wider cultural and political contexts of these conflicts. University’s point of departure is that religion means different things in different circumstances and to different people or groups of people. The course aims to show that conflict and violence are not inherent to religion, nor is religion merely the guise under which social, economic or political conflicts are fought out.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, you will have acquired the knowledge and analytical skills to develop critical insights into one of the most urgent issues of today’s world: the various roles of religion in conflicts.

This course is designed for undergraduate learners who are interested in analysing the relationship between religion and conflict from a social scientific perspective. Although anyone with an interest in the subject can join.

Instructors

The course has been designed by three excellent lecturers from the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies of the University of Groningen.

  • Dr Erin Wilson is a political scientist and Director of the Centre for Religion, Conflict and the Public Domain
  • Dr Marjo Buitelaar is an anthropologist and Associate Professor of Contemporary Islam
  • Dr Kim Knibbe is a sociologist and coordinator of the Master’s degree programme in Religion, Conflict and Globalisation.
