University of Waikato Research Masters Scholarship in New Zealand, 2020

The University of Waikato is pleased to offer research masters scholarship to study in New Zealand. The scholarship is open to New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, and international students.

Applicants whose first language is not English are required to provide satisfactory evidence of English language proficiency, generally in the form of an IELTS or TOEFL score.

Course Level: Scholarship is available for pursuing Postgraduate (Research) program.

Study Subject: Scholarship is awarded any of the subjects offered by the university.

Scholarship Award: The Scholarship will have a value of $12,000 for 90 point theses and $15,000 for 120 point theses or more.

$5,500 is applied directly to the tuition fees for the research component of the master’s degree.

The remainder of the Scholarship will be paid in three instalments.

  • The first instalment will be paid two weeks after enrollment in the thesis OR as soon as arrangements can be made after the awarding of the Scholarship should the recipient have already completed more than two weeks of study.
  • The second instalment will be paid after four months of study.
  • The final instalment will be paid after eight months of study.
  • Should a student hold another fees scholarship for their master’s thesis, the University of Waikato Research Masters Scholarship will pay the balance of any fees (up to $4,500); however, the student will forgo any unused balance of this Scholarship’s fees component.

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for the scholarship:

  • Applicants are expected to have applied to enroll or be planning to enroll, full-time in a thesis of 90-points or more1 as part of their first master’s degree at the University of Waikato.
  • Applicants must commence their thesis within six months of the application closing date.
  • The Scholarship is open to New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, and international students.
  • International students must have completed at least 120 points at any New Zealand University.

Nationality: The Scholarship is open to New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, and international students.

College Admission Requirement

Entrance Requirements: Applicants are expected to have applied to enroll, or be planning to enroll, full-time in a thesis of 90-points or more1 as part of their first master’s degree at the University of Waikato.

English language Requirements: Applicants whose first language is not English are required to provide satisfactory evidence of English language proficiency, generally in the form of an IELTS or TOEFL score. Scores can vary according to the qualification sought. If English is not first language applicant must provide one of the following as evidence of English language proficiency:
IELTS: Some qualifications require an overall band 6.5 and a Writing band 6.0. and some require 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in each band (7.0 overall for Graduate Diploma in Teaching with no less than 7.0 in each band. 7.0 for the Bachelor of Teaching with no less than 7.0 in each band. 7.5 for the Master of Teaching and Learning). The English language proficiency requirements for admission to particular qualifications are at the discretion of the Dean concerned.
TOEFL (internet-based): 90 with a writing score of 22 (100 for Graduate Law)
TOEFL (paper-based): 577 overall including a TWE of 5.0 (100 overall and TWE of 5.5 for Graduate Law)
TOEFL (computer-based): 233 including a TWE of 5.0 (5.5 for Graduate Law)
