IDRC Research Awards for Canadian and Developing Countries Students, 2020

Applications are invited for IDRC research awards available for the citizens of Canada and developing countries who are enrolled in a master’s or a doctoral degree at a recognized university or have completed a master’s or doctoral degree at a recognized university.

Research award recipients will undertake a one-year paid program of research on the topic they submitted when competing for the award. Awardees are considered to be full-time employees of IDRC.

Eligibility

You may apply for research in the following countries and territories, but if you are recommended for an award, your application may be subject to a further stage of approval within IDRC:

Afghanistan, Congo (Democratic Republic of), Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Maldives, Micronesia, Monserrat, Myanmar, Sudan, Suriname, Venezuela, West Bank and Gaza, Zimbabwe, some small island states (including Comoros, São Tomé and Principe, Saint Helena, Timor-Leste), and the Pacific Islands (Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Wallis & Futuna).

  • Canadians or permanent residents of Canada who are enrolled in a master’s or a doctoral degree at a recognized university OR have completed (within the last three years) a master’s or doctoral degree at a recognized university.
  • Citizens of a developing country who are enrolled in a master’s or a doctoral degree at a Canadian university OR have completed (within the last three years) a master’s or doctoral degree at a recognized university. In either case, applicants must already have a work permit valid for full-time work (37.5 hours per week) in Canada until December 31, 2020, prior to applying.
  • The proposed research must focus on one or more developing countries.
  • These awards may be part of an academic requirement.
  • The specific eligibility criteria for each research theme must be satisfied.

Scholarship Open for Students of Following Countries: Citizens of Canada and developing countries pursuing doctoral studies at a Canadian university can apply these IDRC Research Awards.

The number of awards (s): Approximately 20 awards will be offered during this competition.

Duration of award(s): Award tenure corresponds to the period of field research. In general, it will be no less than 3 consecutive months in each developing country researched and no more than 12 months. IDRC is responsible for field research expenses occurring only from the date indicated in the official notification to successful candidates. The award is not retroactive; previous field research expenses will not be reimbursed.

What does it cover? Salary for one year in Canada: CA$41,310-$47,822
