Short Term Training Awards for Pacific and Timor-Leste Citizens in New Zealand, 2020

Applications are invited for New Zealand Short Term Training Awards funded by the New Zealand Aid Programme, the New Zealand Government’s international aid, and development program. Individuals from selected developing countries can undertake the training of up to one year in duration in New Zealand.

New Zealand Short Term Training Awards give candidates from selected countries an opportunity to gain knowledge and skills through study in specific subject areas which will assist in the development of their home country.

The New Zealand Aid Programme delivers New Zealand’s official support for developing countries. The purpose of New Zealand’s aid is to develop shared prosperity and stability in the Pacific and beyond, drawing on the best of New Zealand’s knowledge and skills.

Scholarship Description:

  • Application Deadline: Throughout the year
  • Course Level: Awards are available for undertaking one-year training in New Zealand (Training Certificate, Internship/work experience program, graduate certificate and graduate diploma).
  • Study Subject: A wide range of short-term vocational and/or skills courses or work attachments are offered.
  • Scholarship Award: The entitlements of the Scholarship include full tuition fees, a living allowance (paid fortnightly), an establishment allowance, medical and travel insurance, travel between their home country and New Zealand at the start and end of their scholarship, home leave or reunion travel for some eligible scholars, pastoral and academic support at their institution, and assistance with research and thesis costs for most postgraduate research students.

Eligibility for the Scholarship:

  • Eligible Countries: Applications for New Zealand-Short Term Training Awards (STTA) are welcome from the following countries:List of Counties: Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, French Polynesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Caledonia, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Wallis and Futuna.
  • Entrance Requirements: Applicants must meet the following conditions to be eligible for a New Zealand Scholarship:
    • Be a minimum of 18 years of age at the time of commencing your scholarship.
    • Be a citizen of the country from which you are applying for a scholarship.
    • A member of the diplomatic corps or a dependent of a member of the diplomatic corps, living outside their own country, can apply for a Scholarship.
    • Applicants must have at least one year of full-time or two years of part-time work experience (paid, unpaid or voluntary) that relates to my career and/or my proposed training program.
      • Have resided in your home country for at least two years immediately prior to commencing your scholarship.
      • Important note: this condition does not apply to applicants who are members of the diplomatic corps or their dependents, and may not apply to applicants for Short Term Scholarships.
      • Have at least 2 years of work experience (part-time or fulltime, paid or voluntary).
      • Important note: this condition does not apply to applicants from the Pacific who are applying for a pre-service scholarship -Not be serving military personnel.
      • Be able to satisfy Immigration requirements for international student entry to New Zealand or the country in which you will undertake your scholarship (i.e. medical checks, police clearances/character checks, etc.)
      • Be academically and linguistically able to obtain an Offer of Place for the proposed program of study from the tertiary institute where you will undertake your scholarship.
      • Not have been previously terminated from a New Zealand Government Scholarship
      • Seek a qualification that will contribute to the sustainable development of your home country
      • Commit to return to your country for a minimum of 2 years at the end of your scholarship.

How to Apply: Short Term Training Scholarships are available throughout the year. Contact your relevant New Zealand High Commission or New Zealand Embassy to submit an application.

  • The New Zealand Short Term Training Scholarships application process differs depending on which country you are from. You may be able to apply all year round or within application opening and closing dates.
  • Contact your local New Zealand Embassy or High Commission at any time for the scholarship application dates and to get the application form. Embassy and High Commission staff can help you to complete the application form.
  • Supporting Documents: Applicants need to submit a certified copy of the personal pages of your passport, a current curriculum vitae, a current job description stating your position title and outlining your responsibilities and duties, Certified copies of your academic transcripts and completion certificates, Evidence of completion of all primary education, Evidence of completion of five years of secondary education.
  • Language Requirements: Where available, certified copies of your International English proficiency test results, such as International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), from within the last 18 months.
