2015/2016 Sir Edward Youde Memorial Overseas Fellowship/Scholarship for Disabled Students, Hong kong

Government of Hong Kong is awarding fellowship/scholarship for disabled students to pursue full-time postgraduate or undergraduate studies in any tertiary educational and/or academic institution outside Hong Kong. The maximum value of award is  HK$300,000 and HK$280,000 for fellowship and scholarship respectively for the 2015/16 academic year. For fellowship, up to three years for Doctoral degree or two years for Master degree. For scholarship, up to three years subject to the progress of the successful candidate being deemed satisfactory by the Council. The deadline for application awards for 2015/16 academic year is 30 September 2014.

Eligibility: Applicants must:
-be permanent residents of Hong Kong;
-have received at least 7 and 5 years of continuous full-time education in Hong Kong for fellowship and scholarship respectively;
-For fellowship, hold good Honours degrees obtained in Hong Kong or equivalent qualifications OR expect to obtain such degrees or equivalent qualifications;
-fulfill all application procedures and admission requirements at the institution of their choices and be offered places subsequently;
-have a good mastery of the language in which their studies will be undertaken; and
-have special educational needs as referred to in the Hong Kong Rehabilitation Programme Plan released by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government (including those having physical disabilities, visual impairment, hearing impairment, speech and language impairment, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders, specific learning difficulties, autism spectrum disorders and/or intellectual disabilities).

Scholarship Open for International Students: This scholarship is open for disabled residents of Hong Kong;

Scholarship Description: The Sir Edward Youde Memorial Overseas Fellowship/Scholarship for disabled students aim at financing outstanding disabled Hong Kong students for overseas postgraduate or undergraduate studies. They are expected to contribute significantly to the development of Hong Kong after graduation.

Number of award(s): The Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund (SEYMF) Council is offering an award of Fellowship /
Scholarship to finance one outstanding disabled student in Hong Kong.

Duration of award(s): For a Fellowship, up to three years for Doctoral degree or two years for Master degree depending on the length of the proposed study programme and subject to the progress of the successful candidate being deemed satisfactory by the
Council. For a Scholarship, up to three years subject to the progress of the successful candidate being deemed satisfactory by the Council.

 What does it cover? The maximum value of award is HK$300,000 and HK$280,000 for fellowship and scholarship respectively for the 2015/16 academic year. The Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Council may adjust downward the value by taking into account the actual university fees, necessary living expenses and other award(s) held concurrently by the fellow/scholar to finance his/her overseas studies.

Selection Criteria: Successful candidate will be one who has attained a reasonably high standard of scholastic achievements and has demonstrated his / her ability to maintain health of body and mind; to adapt to new environment; to set a good example for other disabled persons and to be a potential leader in the community. The degree of disability and the need to take up education overseas will also be taken into consideration. He / She is expected to have a strong sense of commitment to Hong Kong and should be able to contribute significantly to the society after graduation from overseas studies.

 Notification: Suitable applicants will be invited to attend a selection interview in Hong Kong to be held in around February / March 2015. Any applicant who has not received an invitation to attend an interview by March 2015 may assume that his / her application has been unsuccessful. The decision of the Council shall be final.
