Types of Scholarships:

Academic-Based Scholarships:

The University awards various academic scholarships as follows:
ACT & GPA-Based Scholarships (Alabama and out of state residents): This scholarship is available for U.S. citizens or permanent residents, residents of Alabama and residents of other states attending an Alabama high school. Entering freshmen who have their admission documents postmarked by that date are automatically considered for ACT & GPA-based scholarships.
Scholarships and Financial Assistance for International Students: The UAB awards various types of scholarships for international students. It includes scholarships for freshmen, Baccalaureate Scholarship, Honors college scholarship, College of Arts and Sciences Scholarships and Collat School of Business Scholarships. Each scholarship has its own eligibility criteria.
Transfer Academic Scholarships: These scholarships are available to new students transferring from 2-year community colleges. No separate application is required. Students  are automatically considered for all university-wide academic scholarships upon admission to UAB. All scholarships are awarded as funds are available and are renewable for two years.
Regional Scholarships: In this category following scholarships are included: Birmingham advanced placement (AP) scholarship, AP recognition award, Jane Knight Lowe, Birmingham News-Clarence B. Hanson Jr. Scholarship, Crawford T. and Virginia Johnson Scholarship and Virginia and Anna Praytor Scholarship. New freshmen are typically considered for all university-wide academic scholarships upon admission to UAB. However, a few scholarships require supplemental applications.
National Scholarships: These scholarships are available for national merit finalists, national achievement finalists and national Hispanic scholars. Scholarships include full tuition and required fees (up to 15 credit hours per semester), as well as an on-campus housing allotment, for a total of 8 academic semesters (fall and spring only). It also includes a one-time $2,500 stipend to be used for experiential learning (Study Away, internships, co-ops, etc.).
School & Department Scholarships: Many schools and departments at UAB offer scholarships for talented and promising new students. These are as follows:
-College of arts and sciences scholarships are for undergraduate and graduate students. Most scholarships and awards range in value between $500 and $1,000, though there are exceptions.
-School of Business scholarships are available to business students at all levels. Most of these scholarships have specific academic requirements and some have special conditions that must be met. In some cases, students must demonstrate financial need in order to qualify.
-School of Education scholarships are for students in good standing and pursuing degrees from the School of Education. Each scholarship has its own eligibility criteria.
-School of Public Health scholarships are available for all new incoming fall semester students with at least a 3.0 gpa who submit an application for admission.
-School of Engineering scholarships range from $1,000 to $4,500 per year. UAB Engineering scholarships are merit-based and are for incoming freshmen.
-School of Nursing scholarships are for all currently enrolled students and students with a valid application submitted to the School for the fall 2015 semester.
-School of Health Professions scholarships are available for Alabama residents, U.S. citizens and international students.

Other Academic Scholarships:

There are various other academic scholarships available for entering freshmen. Students are typically considered for all university-wide academic scholarships upon admission to UAB, as long as they are admitted by December 1 for the upcoming summer or fall semester. However, a few scholarships do require supplemental applications.

Art & Performance scholarships:

The UAB awards following types of art & performance scholarships
Music scholarships: Scholarships are based on individual auditions before the music faculty. Awards are made for one academic year and are divided into two equal payments for each of the two semesters of the year. Students who wish to become music majors should plan to audition on one of the department’s music major audition days and are automatically considered for one or more scholarships. Non-music majors may audition with the director of choral activities or the director of bands at any time.
Art & Art History Scholarships: The department awards various scholarships to students majoring in any course available in the art and history department.
Theatre Scholarships: As a theatre student—performance, design, technical, directing, or even theatre history—you may be eligible for scholarships and stipends to help you perfect your art.

Athletic Scholarships:

Through these scholarships, UAB supports outstanding student athletes. The athletic prowess that got you on the team can help you in your pursuit of academic prowess. And that’s as good as any trophy.

Student Life Scholarships:

Under this category following types of scholarships are available: Aaron Lamar, Jr. Scholarship; Camille Armstrong Memorial Scholarship Fund; Emerging Leaders Scholarship and Virginia Gauld National Society Endowed Scholarship. These scholarships are available for degree seeking students or who are enrolled in undergraduate degree program.

Veterans Scholarships:

These merit based veterans scholarships provide VA Yellow Ribbon benefits to qualified students. These scholarships are categorized into two broad category i.e. scholarships for veterans and scholarships for military children.

UAB National Alumni Society Scholarships:

The UAB National Alumni Society provided $750,000 in scholarships, grants, and gifts to the university last year. These scholarships assist UAB students who will later become future alumni. The scholarships are available for incoming freshman, transfer students, graduate students, upperclassmen and international students.

UAB Office for Equity and Diversity Scholarships:

The UAB Office for Equity and Diversity provides graduate and undergraduate awards that include Comprehensive Minority Student Development Program and Equity and Diversity Enhancement Program. The former program is available to qualified African American students, newly enrolled at UAB and seeking to earn a Ph.D. degree and the later program is available for qualified underrepresented minority or women students, newly enrolled at UAB and seeking to earn a Ph.D. degree.
