The Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research, established by Deborah Posel in September 2001, is a part of the University of the Witwatersrand, which is a multi-campus South African public research university in Johannesburg. It is known as one of the most influential institutes globally, ranking 244th in Best Global Universities.

Why choose to study at the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research? The Institute has successfully address both a local, popular audience who is interested in the post-Apartheid moment and a large global scholarly network. It has also been shaping global and local audiences with an interest in the pressing political and cultural concerns of the Post-Apartheid and postcolonial era since 2013 after it gained generous support from donors.
