Applications are invited for AMVETS National Scholarship Program available for graduating high school senior entering at the college freshmen level in the upcoming fall semester. Winning student will be awarded $1,000 each year for a maximum of four years. It must be used for full-time study at either an undergraduate college or university or an accredited technical/trade school leading to a certification or degree. Selection is based on academic promise, financial need and merit. The application deadline is April 15.

Eligibility:
-Must be a graduating high school senior entering at the college freshmen level in the upcoming fall semester.
-Must have a minimum high school grade point average (GPA) of 3.0. (Or documented evidence of extenuating circumstances that caused a lower GPA.)
-Must be the child or grandchild of a United States veteran.
-Must be a United States citizen.
-Must demonstrate academic promise and financial need.
-Must agree to authorize AMVETS to publicize your scholarship award, if you are selected.

Scholarship Open for International Students: AMVETS National Scholarship ProgramUS citizens are eligible to apply for this AMVETS national scholarship program.

Scholarship Description: AMVETS offers the four-year scholarship. It must be used for full-time study at either an undergraduate college or university or an accredited technical/trade school leading to a certification or degree. $1,000 will be awarded each year for a maximum of four years contingent upon maintaining a 2.0 grade point average or equivalent and showing evidence of enrollment. AMVETS will not make more than a $1,000 payment per year even if the student is on an accelerated schedule. The scholarship must be used in its entirety within five years of the award date. Any amount remaining unused within five years will be forfeited. The purpose of this scholarship is to make the goal of post secondary education more attainable for the children and grandchildren of veterans by assisting deserving students who might not otherwise have the financial means to achieve their educational goals. A total of six scholarships of this level will be awarded nationally, one per each of the six National Districts of AMVETS.

Notification: Awards will made in 19 June.

How to Apply: Completed application and required forms must be postmarked. The required materials are:
-A copy of the veteran’s honorable discharge. (Form DD 214) Dependents of current military personnel must submit a letter from the base commander certifying the active duty status of the parent.
-Official high school transcripts including the first grading period of the senior year in high school. Transcripts must be in the 4.0 grade scale, or if in a different system, translated to the 4.0 scales.
-SAT and/or ACT scores.
-A complete and signed copy of the parent(s)’/guardian(s)’ 1040 tax form must be enclosed. It will be used to verify financial need. The applicant’s name must also appear on the tax form.
-A copy of the applicant’s Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
-Essay (50-100 words) entitled and addressing the theme of “What A Higher Education Means To Me”(The essay must be written in the space provided on page 3).
-Acceptance letter from the accredited school you will attend.
-Proof of college expenses (A copy of expenses out of the college publication will suffice).
-A résumé detailing extracurricular activities, volunteer activities, community services, and jobs held during the past four years

Scholarship Application Deadline: The application deadline is April 15.
