Canada-Latin America and Caribbean Research Exchanges Grants (LACREG), 2014

Applications are invited for Canada-Latin America and the Caribbean Research Exchange Grants program (LACREG) available for academic researchers from Canada and Latin America and the Caribbean. Grants support small collaborative research activities in at least one area of the International Development Research Centre’s thematic priority. AUCC expects to award 13-15 grants. The maximum value of each grant will be $15,000. Grant recipients will have approximately 18 months to carry out their research. Application should be submitted till April 28, 2014.

Study Subject (s): Grants are awarded in areas that correspond to IDRC’s  programming priorities. Projects funded by IDRC must address one or more of the Centre’s four broad program areas: Agriculture and the Environment, Global Health Policy, Science and Innovation and Social and Economic Policy.
Course Level: Grants are available for undertaking collaborative research project.

Eligibility: The project must involve at least one researcher from Canada and one from Latin America or the Caribbean. Canadian project researchers must be:
-Regular, full-time faculty members (i.e. tenure or tenure-tracked) with a doctorate occupying a position below the dean at a Canadian university which is a member of AUCC; or
-Regular, full-time researchers with a doctorate at an affiliated institution of an AUCC member university such as a hospital or a research institute; or
-Full-time graduate students (pursuing a master’s degree, doctorate or post-doctorate) at a Canadian university which is a member of AUCC.
Latin American and Caribbean project researchers must be:
-Regular, full-time faculty members with a doctorate occupying a position below the dean at a recognized and established institution of higher education in one of the eligible LAC countries; or
-Regular, full-time researchers with a doctorate at an affiliated institution of a LAC university such as a hospital or a research institute; or
-Full-time graduate students (pursuing a master’s degree, doctorate, post-doctorate) at a recognized institution of higher education in one of the LAC eligible countries.

Scholarship Open for International Students: Applicants from Canada and the following Latin American and Caribbean countries: Argentina, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela can apply for these research exchanges grants.

Scholarship Description: Association of Universities and Colleges of CanadaThe Canada-Latin America and the Caribbean Research Exchange Grants program (LACREG) is designed to strengthen international partnerships and consolidate emerging networks among academic researchers from Canada and Latin America and the Caribbean. Its purpose is to support small collaborative research activities which will contribute to the creation, dissemination and sustained application of knowledge in the development process in at least one area of the International Development Research Centre’s thematic priority.

Number of award(s): AUCC expects to award 13-15 grants.

Duration of award(s): Grant recipients will have approximately 18 months to carry out their research.

What does it cover? Support through this program will be cost-shared on a 2:1 ratio by the program and the partner institutions, respectively. The maximum value of each grant will be $15,000.

Selection Criteria: The committee will develop a shortlist of projects eligible for funding based on merit (i.e. the committee will not attempt to distribute projects by region or IDRC program area). The shortlist will be forwarded to IDRC’s regional office in Montevideo and to IDRC’s Canadian Partnerships program in Ottawa for final approval.

Notification: It is anticipated that results will be announced in June 2014.
