For those who love decorating residential and commercial interior space, making a career in interior decorating is the good option to go for. Many small and large firms employ professional interior decorators to get a whole new design. With real estate booming and many new commercial and residential complex are coming up, there is a huge requirement of interior decorators both in India and abroad.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the interior decorating field will grow in faster rate by 2018. Interior designing firms hiring fresher want them to have formal educational knowledge regarding the field. Some states in overseas, want interior decorators to carry license to offer service professionally. National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) offers certification or licensure, depending on the state, which typically requires six years of combined education, career experience and successful passing of an exam.

Education Requirement For Interior Designing

As mentioned, there are separate courses offered in interior designing.  Most art and design schools offer certificate and degree courses.  These courses include drawing, CAD, furniture design and architecture. Universities and colleges offering graduate courses also offer apprenticeship which allows students to work simultaneously. This helps students to learn about the field deeply.

Companies To Work With

There are many real estate companies and urban development companies that keep looking for fresh minded interior designers. Both in India and overseas the demand for interior decorators is increasing.  Hotels & resorts, event management companies, hospitals and city planning bureaus keep hiring fresh and even professional interior designers. The same goes for overseas students.

Universities and Institutes that offers courses in Interior Design

Kingston University

Ranked 100 by The Guardian in 2014, this college is well-known for its sprawling campus and ability to produce students having in-depth knowledge of desired field. At Kingston, students will go through practical skills to understand the environment of interior designing.  The 3yr BA (Hons) in interior designing will take students to a new level of modern designing, technical and IT skills required in the field.

Fees and Scholarships: The fees for the course depend on student resident. For overseas students- 13,300 pounds and Home (UK and EU students) 9,000 pounds is offered. The university also offers variety of scholarships for both home and overseas students. This includes- Loyalty Bursaries, Faculty Scholarships, International Scholarships, External Scholarships, and Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan. There are special loans for US and Canada students.

Manipal University

The university has been ranked 5th in India by Higher Education Review “TOP 25 Private/ Deemed University in India 2014. The university offers Undergraduate (BA in interior design), PG, Diploma and Certificate courses, that lays emphasis on fundamentals of design, residential and non-residential space planning.  Students are exposed to various facets of interior designing with strong business foundation. In three years of UG course, the program offers two specializations in 3rd yr- Business Management and Product Design.

Scholarship & Loans:  Students can apply for SBI Scholar Loan applying at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal Institute of Technology. MIT loan is upto Rs 7.5 lacs without security and Rs 30 lacs with security.

Georgia State University

This is a reputed university in US and ranks 164 among US colleges by Center for World University Rankings.  The interior designing/decorating course under Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio and Master’s prepares students to understand the values of contemporary interior design practice. The program has been accredited by NASAD (National Association of Schools of Art and Design).

Scholarships and Grants: The University offers various scholarships and grants for students taking up different course. Students taking up Arts & Design course are offered with Andrew M. West Memorial Art Scholarship.

Vancouver Island University

This is among the top universities in Canada and offers 4yr Bachelor of Interior Design by Art and Design Department. The program is recognized by Provincial Professional Charter, IDIBC offering both theoretical and practical knowledge of interior designing. The interior design curriculum features lecture, studio, critique, and computer lab instruction; independent and collaborative projects; formal and informal presentations; field trips; an internship and a final major project spanning two semesters.

Scholarships: VIU offers international student scholarships and awards of different amounts.  Some of the funding s are- VIU World Wide Entrance Scholarships ($1000 each), British Columbia High School International Excellence Entrance Scholarship ($1000 each), International UG Regional Scholarships ($5,000) and 2014 Regions (The open scholarship is available to students from any nation outside of the countries already identified in the other Regional Scholarships).

University of Melbourne

Ranked 43rd in 2014 by Australian University Ranking, the university offers Master of Architecture course which is accredited by Australian Institute of Architects, Architects Registration Board of Victoria and Commonwealth Association of Architects. Students can either take up 2yrs full time/ 4yrs part time or 3yrs full time/6yrs part time course in interior designing. Students are given chance to take part in MSD Travelling Studio.

Scholarship: The scholarship offered covers Graduate Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma and Masters Coursework degrees. International – $33,728 per year, Domestic – $29,504 per year (some Commonwealth Supported Places available are offered. Other scholarships offered are- Melbourne School of Design Scholarship and International PG Coursework Awards (IPCA).
