CGS PhD Scholarships for International Students at University of Cologne in Germany, 2017

Each year Cologne Graduate School awards up to 10 scholarships to international students. Scholarships are available for pursuing the three-year PhD program within the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences.

It is the expressed purpose of this intensive program to educate excellent researchers and teachers who, after obtaining their degree, will mainly stay in academia.

The Cologne Graduate School in Management, Economics and Social Sciences constitutes the integrated program of the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Cologne. Initiated in 2008 it is dedicated to excellence in teaching and research and is funded by the State of North Rhine-Westfalia and the University of Cologne.

All applicants need to document very good English skills since the teaching language in most cases is English.

Course Level: Scholarships are available for pursuing PhD programme.

Study Subject: Scholarships are awarded to study the subjects offered within the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences.

Scholarship Award: Fellows receive a monthly stipend of EUR 1.200 for three years. No tuition is charged. Note: Please note that fellows are required to pay for their health insurance out of this sum. Following a successful evaluation after the first year, fellowships will be extended for another two years. A full PhD program runs for three years. Extension of fellowships beyond this period is not possible. Fellowships are tax-free. Students will have office space within the CGS department, full access to all libraries and other university institutions and additional funds for participation in conferences, summer schools, etc.

Number of Scholarships: Each year CGS awards up to 10 scholarships to excellent students (among the top 10% of their year) with a Master/Dipl. degree or close to finishing their degree.

Scholarship can be taken in the Germany

Eligibility: To be admitted, students must hold a Master’s Degree or a Diploma in a discipline relevant to the curriculum and research interests of CGS. Relevant disciplines are Economics, Management, Finance, Social/Political Sciences, Energy Economics/Policy, Econometrics/Statistics and related fields. First time Fellowship in Matching and Market Design: to applyIf you intend to work on topics related to Matching Market Design you may also apply for a special scholarship under the supervision of Alexander Westkamp. Candidates must have a proven record of academic excellence and belong to the top 10% in their respective field.

Nationality: Citizens of all nationalities are to apply.

College Admission Requirement

Entrance Requirement: Applicants for a PhD scholarship are admitted by the Board of CGS-based on their grades, expertise and availability of a potential supervisor

Test Requirement: Please note that for applicants for Economics and Management (all pertinent areas) they require a GRE or GMAT (for Cologne students: TM Wise).

English Language Requirement: All applicants need to document very good English skills since the teaching language in most cases is English.

Step 1: Submit Application and Registration Form. Do not send any other materials until requested to do so!

Step 2: Submit Supplementary Application Materials as requested by CGS

Application Materials

After you have registered, you will be asked to submit your application forms. These should include:

  • A cover letter with a clear statement of your motivation and your research interest
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • A list of possible dissertation topics with a short explanation of each
  • Abitur-Zeugnis (for German residents only)
  • GMAT/GRE and TOEFL (or IELTS)
  • Scans of official academic transcripts
  • Scan of your last degree awarded
  • Two recommendations to be filled out on-line and submitted directly to CGS by two referees
