Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is inviting applicants for the  Graduate fellowships for international and Canadian applicants in Canada.

These fellowships are awarded up to 1 year for master studies and 3 years for doctoral studies in the field of health law, ethics and policy at any of following law schools: Faculty of Law, University of Sherbrooke, Faculty of Law, University of Alberta, Faculty of Law, University of Toronto and Schulich School of Law, Dalhousie University in Canada.

The Graduate Program in Health Law, Ethics and Policy were created in 2001 with a Strategic Training Initiative in Health Research (STIHR) grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).  It addresses the global shortage of experts in the field of health law, ethics and policy by facilitating multidisciplinary training and supporting groundbreaking research. The program builds capacity in this field by preparing students to address challenges in health care systems within Canada and across the globe.

Eligibility

  • The program welcomes applications from international and Canadian applicants pursuing a full-time masters or doctoral degree at one of our four affiliated Canadian law schools.
  • To be considered for admission to the program, applicants must first be accepted into the graduate program at any of following law schools: Faculty of Law, University of Sherbrooke, Faculty of Law, University of Alberta, Faculty of Law, University of Toronto and Schulich School of Law, Dalhousie University.

Scholarship Open for International Students: International and Canadian applicants can apply for these fellowships.

Number of award (s): Approximately ten fellowships are offered per year.

 Duration of award (s): Master’s –up to 1 year of funding; doctoral – up to 3 years of funding, renewable yearly.

How to Apply: Applications should be submitted by post and should include:

  • Submit the Application Form
  • Transcripts from all universities attended
  • Two academic letters of reference
  • A curriculum vitae (CV)
  • One page (maximum) statement of interest in health law, ethics & policy

Benefits of the program include:

  • A CIHR Training Stipend ($17,500) for those applying for a funded position (some conditions apply)
  • A Boot Camp where outgoing graduate students organize the sessions designed for incoming students each September. The Boot Camp focuses on informing new students about the theoretical principles and practical realities of research ethics, knowledge translation, and multidisciplinary approaches to research.
  • An Annual Colloquium where CIHR Fellows gather to present their work before an audience of leading health law academics and government decision-makers
  • An annual Skills Workshop where CIHR Fellows are given training in research grant writing, pedagogical skills, and research methodologies
  • A biennial National Health Law Conference where students are exposed to important research and research methodologies, and given the chance to network with each other, senior scholars and decision-makers
  • The Health Law, Ethics and Policy Seminar Series where students can interact with local, national, international scholars and policymakers and discuss issues related to the intersection of law with health care and related ethical and social issues Health Law and Policy Courses
  • Support for research projects from a variety of trans-disciplinary mentors
  • Opportunities to apply for internships within Health Canada, provincial ministries of health, and a variety of health care organizations worldwide.
