Human Rights Under Pressure: Interdisciplinary Postdoctoral Fellowships, 2015

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Free University of Berlin has announced two Postdoctoral Fellowships (one at each location) for the 2015-2016 academic year in the Joint Interdisciplinary Program “Human Rights under Pressure” (HR-UP). The fellowship includes a monthly stipend of 1416 € + 103 € for material expenses awarded for a period of 12 months (with a possibility of extension up to 24 months), within the framework of the Joint Interdisciplinary Program “Human Rights under Pressure”. The Fellow will participate in the full HR-UP program curriculum, including interdisciplinary colloquia and annual summer schools. The application deadline is 20th February, 2015.

Scholarship Provider: HR-UP is funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and the Einstein Foundation as an International Research Training Group, and unites world-class researchers and supervisors in various disciplines relating to human rights at both universities and at our partner institutions.

Eligibility: Fellowship application requirements:
-The Fellowship is open to researchers who received their doctorate no earlier than September 2011 – or who will submit their dissertation no later than March 2015 – in any discipline related to human rights.
-The research plan must deal with the current challenges confronting human rights, relevant to the HR-UP research program.
-The Fellow will commit to complete a peer-reviewed article or otherwise significant research project during the 2015-2016 academic year, and to present it at academic events.

Scholarship Open for International Students: German candidates can apply for this fellowship.

Scholarship Description: “Human Rights under Pressure – Ethics, Law, and Politics” – HR-UP is an international, interdisciplinary doctoral and post-doctoral study, research training group under the joint auspices of Free University of Berlin and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The program title “Human Rights under Pressure – Ethics, Law, and Politics“covers the comprehensive guiding research question of how contemporary challenges for human rights impede, promote or transform their definition and realisation. These challenges – or pressures – question traditional concepts, justifications, and modes of implementation of human rights. The lens of “Human Rights under Pressure” allows for a close examination and an analytical grasp of the theoretical and practical dimensions of of specific challenges which human rights are faced with in the contemporary world.

Number of award(s): There are two postdoctoral fellowships available.

Duration of award(s): Successful applicants admitted to the program will benefit from a full scholarship and a rich academic and professional qualification program for three years of their doctoral studies

What does it cover? The fellowship includes:

Notification: All applicants, successful or not, will be informed by the beginning of April 2015 of the results of the application procedure.

How to Apply: Please send applications at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and by email and should include:
-Research plan (up to 2 pp., double space) including a description of the topics the applicant intends to research during the Fellowship year, research methodology and relevance to HR-UP;
-Summary of the applicant’s doctoral thesis (up to 2 pp., double space);
-Curriculum vitae, including publications;
-Two recommendation letters (including one from the applicant’s doctoral supervisor).
