International PhD Scholarship in Korean Studies, Ireland

Bright and dynamic international students chasing PhD research in Korean Studies can apply for the PhD Scholarship in Korean Studies. The scholarship will be awarded to one student by the Irish Institute of Korean Studies at University College Cork.

This scholarship is exclusively for students pursuing PhD research on a topic in the areas of Korea’s Intellectual History or Contemporary Korean Society. International and EU students who are applying for a PhD in Korean Studies at the Irish Institute of Korean Studies at UCC are eligible. Assessment of the winner will be done on the basis of the documents provided. The scholarship is worth €5,770 per annum for two years.

  • Eligible Course or Subjects: PhD level program taught at the Irish Institute of Korean Studies at the University College Cork.
  • Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following/given criteria:
  • The applicants must be accepted to the PhD (or PhD Track) program.
  • The applicants must have a high level of written and spoken Korean (and/or Classical Chinese for research purposes) and be able to demonstrate such abilities.

  • Supporting Documents: The students are required to present the following documents to the university:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Project proposal 
  • A writing sample in English (no longer than 6,000 words)

  • Admission Requirements: The applicants must have at least Second Class Honours (Grade 1) or equivalent in their first or subsequent degree and must also have a Masters in Korean Studies.
  • Language Requirement: The students must submit scores of the following English language proficiency tests:
  • Duolingo – 120 
  • TOEFL IBT – 90 
  • IELTS – 6.5 
  • PTE – 63

The scholarship winner announced by the University College Cork can expect to be awarded the amount of the first two years of PhD fees, i.e., €5,770 per annum (subject to change).
