BI Norwegian Business School is an internationally recognised not-for-profit private institution, located in Norway. Established in 1943, BI has one of Europe’s largest and most productive academic environments.

Course Level: Scholarships are available for pursuing PhD programme.

Study Subject: Scholarships are awarded within the field of business administration. The programme features six areas of specialisation: Finance, Economics, Strategic Management, Marketing, Leadership and Organization as well as Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

Scholarship Award: The four-year scholarships are currently NOK 444 800,- per year (will be adjusted during 2016). The positions provide for automatic membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund (Statens Pensjonskasse).The scholarships require 25% teaching or research assistant responsibilities. PhD candidates will have their place of work at BI Norwegian Business School in Oslo, Norway.

Scholarship can be taken in the Norway

Eligibility: Applicants must have completed a two-year (120 ECTS) Master’s Degree with thesis work (preferably a Master of Science) by September 2017 to be considered for a scholarship. An average grade of B or better is required. Final year Master of Science students are encouraged to apply.

PhD Scholarship – Leadership and Organization: The four-year programme is designed for talented students who wish to pursue an international career within academia and who can contribute to the international arena with their research and publications. This is in keeping with the school’s vision of being one of the leading research business schools in Europe.

PhD Scholarships – Strategic Management: The PhD specialization in Strategic Management focuses on developing doctoral students’ theoretical knowledge and methodological skills required to become successful researchers in the area of strategic management. The school encourages applications from students with a strong background in disciplines such as economics, business administration, and organisational and behavioural sciences. The ideal candidate is interested in pursuing an academic career in research and teaching and has strong communication and analytical skills. The school welcome research interests and project proposals in areas such as competitive strategy and business models, international strategy, corporate structures and governance, entrepreneurship, knowledge-based strategy and strategic leadership and processes, alliances and M&As, as well as organizational design.

PhD Scholarship – Marketing: The PhD specialization in Marketing focuses on developing doctoral students’ theoretical knowledge and methodological skills required to become successful researchers. The school welcomes applications from students with a strong background in disciplines such as business, economics, social psychology and statistics.

Nationality: Norwegian and international students can apply for these scholarships.

College Admission Requirement

Entrance Requirement: To gain admission to the Doctoral Programme a student must formally apply to be accepted into the PhD Programme at BI Norwegian Business School. Applicants must:

  • Have at least five years of higher education
  • Hold a two-year scientific Master degree (MSc) (120 ECTS) with B average or better
  • Hold a Master’s degree that includes thesis work (15 to 30 ECTS)
  • Hold a Master’s degree within the fields of economics and business administration or an area in which BI offers a PhD specialization
  • Hold degree(s) from an accredited institution or an institution recognised by NOKUT

Test Requirement:

  • BI will need percentile scores and raw scores for the Verbal, Quantitative and Analytical Writing sections of the GRE or GMAT to consider your application. Incomplete sections or partial scores are not sufficient to consider your application. Arrange to have official score reports sent directly to BI. Photocopies and/or examinee copies of score reports are not acceptable.
  • A “good score” is generally considered to be 85% and higher. However, there is no minimum cutoff score for the GRE/GMAT in order for your file to be reviewed.

English Language Requirement: Students are required to have a good command of the English language. The following applicants will be considered to fit this profile:

  • Applicants whose native language is English
  • Applicants with a qualifying master degree from a Nordic (Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Finnish or Icelandic) institution
  • Applicants with a qualifying master degree where the language of tuition was English

All other applicants must take either TOEFL or IELTS. The minimum standards for test scores that BI accepts are

  • TOEFL – a total score of 575 points for the written test or 233 for the computer-based version or 90 points on the internet-based test
  • IELTS- a score of 6.5

How to Apply: Please note that all documents must be uploaded in the electronic application. Applicants are required to upload the following with their application

  • Certificate of a Master of Science degree or equivalent, please include transcripts of grades
  • Certificate of a Bachelor degree or equivalent, including transcript of grades
  • A Diploma Supplement or a similar document describing in detail the study and grade system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree
  • Other relevant certificates and transcripts
  • A project proposal (5-10 pages including topic, proposed method, schedule)
  • CV
  • A research plan with milestones and a list of the courses you plan to take
  • Letters of recommendations from relevant employers/tutors providing evidence of your skills as a researcher (a minimum of 2 letters)
  • Certificates from previously completed courses at the doctoral level, if requesting approval of these for the PhD programme at BI Norwegian Business School (see section 2 in our PhD Regulations)
  • A complete list of all publications and/or other documented relevant activities
  • Signed verification document.
