João Havelange Research Scholarship in Switzerland, 2017

Applications are invited for João Havelange Research Scholarship which aimed at promoting football-related scientific research. Applicants from Switzerland are eligible to apply for this scholarship programme.

The scholarships are intended to encourage and facilitate the work of researchers who have completed their studies and have been awarded a university diploma, bachelor’s degree, state examination, doctorate or an equivalent degree.

The International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) is an independent study centre located in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. CIES was created in 1995 as a joint venture between the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the University of Neuchâtel, the City and State of Neuchâtel. Using a multi-disciplinary approach (law, sociology, geography, history and management) CIES provides research, top-level education and consulting services to the world of sport.

Course Level: Scholarship is available to pursue research.

Study Subject: Aimed at promoting football-related scientific research, the João Havelange Research Scholarship is awarded to a researcher of university degree or equivalent for studies in the following fields of sport:

  • Law
  • Economics
  • Sociology
  • Ethics
  • Geography
  • History

Scholarship Award: The maximum possible amount for one scholarship award is USD 30’000.-.

Number of Scholarships: One scholarship is available.

Scholarship can be taken in Switzerland

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for scholarship:

  • The scholarships are intended to encourage and facilitate the work of researchers who have completed their studies and have been awarded a university diploma, bachelor’s degree, state examination, doctorate or an equivalent degree. The research shall be conducted in an academic environment (i.e. supervised by a professor, lecturer or academic). Upon request by the candidate, the research may be conducted under the supervision of the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) at Neuchâtel University.

Nationality: Applicants from Switzerland are eligible to apply for this scholarship programme.

College Admission Requirement

Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have been awarded a university diploma, bachelor’s degree, state examination, doctorate or an equivalent degree.

English Language Requirements: Applicants whose first language is not English are usually required to provide evidence of proficiency in English at the higher level required by the University.

How to Apply: Please send your completed form by post before 1st September. The applicant(s) shall fill in the form and return it, duly completed, to CIES with the following documents (in this order, please do not fold or staple the sheets):

a) Research plan (maximum 7 pages) which must include:

  • Summary of the project (maximum 1 page)
  • Theoretical framework
  • Methodology, questions and hypotheses
  • Objectives and academic relevance of the study
  • Main results/outputs expected
  • Table of contents

b) List of prior publications and research work

c) Curriculum vitae

d) Copy of passport

e) Detailed budget in US Dollars (maximum USD 30’000.-)

f) Certified copies of academic qualifications (diploma, degree, doctorate, etc.)

g) Recommendation letters from two professors

h) Certification of language proficiency (e.g. copies of language course diplomas) if mother tongue is not one of the official FIFA languages (English, French, Spanish or German).
