Scholarship Description: The field of science in nano scale has largely focused on the discovery and the synthesis of new nano structured materials, the understanding of their core, surface, and interface structures as well as unique properties in these reduced dimensional systems. These activities will continue to point towards the discovery of new structures /understanding as far as the development of novel materials/devices/their properties that can be exploited with the advancement of (in) organic nano science. Any forefront nano science effort must have extensive, high-end electron microscopy capabilities. To create viable technologies from the basic discoveries and synthesis of (in) organic nano scale structure and chemistry, we must develop a systematic understanding of the primary structure, chemistry and methodologies. Recent technological advances in the field of electron microscopy have increased the spatial resolution into the sub-Å range, the energy resolution to sub-eV and the sensitivity to detect single atoms. These new capabilities of TEMs are also the key to perform 3-D microscopy (tomography) with atomic resolution. We believe that the time is ripe to exploit these TEM methods to understand (in) organic nano scale materials, their properties and phenomena, as well as their nano toxicity to, in the end, produce save technologies, applications, and devices to justify the large investment that has placed on these studies.
