The University of Cape Town is offering the Kevin Rochford Memorial Scholarship for South African students in 2016-2017. The scholarship is awarded for 1st year of the B.Ed (Honours) degree, the 1st or 2nd year of the Master’s degree or 1st, 2nd or 3rd year of the PhD degree in Science Education (or Mathematics).

University aims to produce graduates whose qualifications are internationally recognized and locally applicable, underpinned by values of engaged citizenship and social justice. The University of Cape Town (UCT) is a public research university located in Cape Town in the Western Cape province of South Africa. UCT is the highest-ranked African university in the QS World University Rankings, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and the Academic Ranking of World Universities, and its Law and Commerce Faculties are consistently placed among the hundred best internationally.

The language of instruction is English.  Applicants must submit evidence of proficiency in English as part of their application to study at UCT.

  • Course Level: Scholarship is available for pursuing Bed (Honours), masters and PhD degree programme.
  • Study Subject: Scholarship is awarded to pursue a career in Science (or Mathematics) Education.
  • Scholarship Award: The value of the Scholarship is R25, 000. The tenure of the award is strictly one year. The award may be renewable for the second year of registration for Master’s or Doctoral students and for the 3rd and final year of registration for Doctoral students.  Renewal of the award will be contingent on satisfactory academic progress and the availability of funds.
  • Scholarship can be taken at South Africa

Eligibility:

Eligible candidates must have achieved a weighted average of at least 60% in the final year of the previous qualification.  Suitable candidates must show financial need and must intend to pursue a career in Science (or Mathematics) Education.  There is no restriction on race or gender.

Nationality: Students of South Africa can apply for this scholarship.

  • How to Apply: Applications must be submitted by post.
  • Supporting Material: Applicants are required to:
    Complete and submit the attached application form.
    write a letter of application outlining the intended study and how she/he intends to use the study in her/his career in the future, specifying the intention to pursue his/her career in Science (or Mathematics)Education;
    attach a certified copy of all academic transcripts (University only);
    attach a certified copy of SA identity document, and provide a letter from the Course Convenor/Head of Department indicating that he/she is likely to -be accepted by the relevant department for study in 2016.
  • Entrance Requirement: To qualify for postgraduate funding, intending postgraduate students must first formally apply for an academic place at UCT. Only students registering for Honours, Masters and Doctoral degrees are eligible.
  • English Language Requirement: Applicants must submit evidence of proficiency in English as part of their application to study at UCT. For South African applicants, either:
    a pass in English Home Language or First Additional Language if the applicant holds the NSC, or
    40% In English on the Higher Grade (first or second language) if the applicant holds the Senior Certificate
