  • Eligible Course or Subjects: PhD degree in Mapping Sumatra’s Manuscript Cultures offered by the University
  • Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following criteria:
  • A good Master’s-level degree (or overseas equivalent) in a relevant subject.
  • Advanced proficiency in Malay/Indonesian (other relevant languages, including Arabic, Acehnese, Minangkabau, or Javanese are welcome in addition);
  • Experience and expertise working with archive material, especially Jawi manuscripts, and in digital humanities approaches to archives, or a willingness to expand your skills in these areas;
  • A willingness to work as part of the larger research team and to contribute to the overall aims of the project

  • How to Apply: To be considered for the grant, students have to take admission to the PhD degree at SOAS University of London. After being enrolled, they should download the online scholarship application form.
  • Supporting Documents: A complete application for admission includes academic transcripts and degree certificates, an explanation of the grading system for any degrees obtained outside of the UK, two academic references, a CV, a coherent research proposal of 2000 words, and a supporting statement.
  • Admission Requirements: Applicants should have a first or good second class honours bachelor’s degree from a UK university, or international equivalent, in a subject appropriate to that of the programme to be followed.
  • Language Requirement: In order to ensure that SOAS students have a sufficient standard of English to study effectively, we require international students to submit evidence, during the application process, of their current level of English language proficiency.
