Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013) is the name that needs no introduction. This former president of South Africa was a renowned anti-apartheid revolutionary, lawyer, activist, philanthropist and politician who always wanted to change the lives of young Africans, who will play vital roles in the future of the continent.

Various scholarships are awarded globally by his name to offer a tribute and honour him. He himself also contributed always to the education sector in his lifetime.

Since its inception in 2003 through the Mandela Rhodes Foundation a total of 200 Mandela Rhodes Scholarships have been awarded.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Rhodes Trust via Mandela Rhodes Foundation offer Rhodes Scholarships to African students each year. The scholarships are totally concerned to the benefit of current and future generations of Africans. Building exceptional leadership capacity in Africa is the chief focus of The Mandela Rhodes Foundation.

Mandela Rhodes Scholarships are not only a bursary as with the funding it focuses on leadership development and encourage the exploration of key social issues. The Nelson Mandela Scholarships are available for African students to undertake postgraduate study in South African universities, alongside further leadership development opportunities to continue and upgrade their academic level.

Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship Programme at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in South Africa

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University is inviting applications for vice-chancellor’s scholarship program. The Scholarship is open to South African students only. High-achieving school leavers and those who have taken a break from study for up to two years after Grade 12, who are entering university for the first time on the basis of the Grade 12 results, are welcome to apply.

Mandela Rhodes Foundation Scholarship Programme in South Africa, 2016

Applications is invited for Mandela Rhodes Foundation Scholarship to provide educational opportunities to young postgraduate students from Africa. Mandela Rhodes Scholarship enables a Scholar to study at a South African tertiary institution registered with the South African Council on Higher Education for an accredited postgraduate degree programme. The Scholarship is awarded for one or a maximum of two years, currently for an Honours or Masters degree.

Mandela Magdalene College Scholarship for South African Students in UK

The Magdalene College of University of Cambridge awards college scholarship for graduates from South Africa to pursue one-year taught postgraduate courses of study in subjects relevant to the needs of South Africa. Scholarships support students of outstanding academic merit and leadership potential who would otherwise be unable to take up a place at Cambridge University. Successful applicants will be expected to return to South Africa to work or study after completing the course at Cambridge. The application deadline is 7 December 2016.

African Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship for Sub-Saharan Africans, 2017

Applications are invited for African Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship Program. Scholarship is awarded for pursuing one to two year Master’s level program in public administration, public policy or public finance at a Canadian university. Applicants must be a citizen and resident of sub-Saharan Africa and must be between 22 and 35 years old are eligible to apply.

Mandela Rhodes Scholarships

Initial nominations are by-and-large processed through recognised South African tertiary institutions. The Nelson Mandela scholarships are open to individuals holding a recognised first degree, and who would be under the age of 30 at the time of taking up the Scholarship. The application deadline is 14 June every year.

 

INSEAD Nelson Mandela Endowed Scholarship

INSEAD Business School offers Nelson Mandela Endowed Scholarship. Student must have a substantial part of their lives and received part of their prior education in Africa. Preference will be given to students who need financial assistance. The selection criteria are outstanding academic achievement and promise, aptitude for business and financial management. The deadline for MBA Scholarship applications is 30 November.

Mandela Scholarship for South African Students

Nelson Mandela scholarship is available to pursue 1 semester studies for a maximum of 5 months at Leiden University in Netherlands. Students are selected on the basis of academic merit, motivation and prospects for future contribution towards the development of South Africa. Deadlines are 1 April for programs starting in September and 1 October for programs starting in February 2017.

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Scholarships

NMMU offers financial assistance to full-time students in the form of bursaries, merit awards, scholarships and study loans. In addition to the actual course/module fees, it should also provide for books, equipment, transport, accommodation and general living expenses. Assistance is based on financial need as well as academic excellence and sporting achievements.
