Scholarship Description: Cyclotides are small cyclic peptides with high biological activity including bacterial killing. This project aims to explore the antibacterial activity of different cyclotides, the structural requirements for this killing, the mechanism(s) by which cyclotides kill bacteria and how bacteria acquire resistance. The project will involve both microbiology/molecular biology studies of bacteria as well as pharmacognosy and medicinal chemistry of cyclotides. Supervision will be provided by Dr. Ulf Göransson (pharmacognosy part) and Prof. Dan Andersson (microbiology part).
