University of Liège (Belgium), Faculty of Social Sciences (FaSS), Centre for Ethnic and Migration Studies (CEDEM) are offering Two PhD Scholarships and One Postdoctoral Scholarship on Migrants’ Social Protection Strategies starting in September 2018.

The vacant positions concern the doctoral and postdoctoral level as part of the Migration, Transnationalism and Social Protection in (post-)crisis Europe project (MiTSoPro). This project is funded by an ERC starting grant awarded to Jean-Michel Lafleur.

IMISCOE is the largest European network of scholars in the area of migration and integration. The focus is on comparative research and publications, in the IMISCOE book series as well as in the journal CMS.

Scholarship Description:

Entrance Requirements: Applicants must meet the following criteria:

Vacancy 1: Two PhD Scholarships on Migrants’ Social Protection Strategies:

Profile Needed:

  • MA in Social Sciences (e.g., Sociology, Social Policy, Anthropology, Political Science)
  • Experience conducting ethnographic field work (e.g.,MA thesis)
  • Specialty in social policy and/or migration is an asset
  • Language skills: English plus (at least) one of the following: Arabic, French, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian or Spanish
  • Ability and interest to work in a team

Vacancy 2: One Postdoctoral Scholarship on Migrants’ Social Protection Strategies:

Profile Needed:

  • PhD in the Social Sciences (e.g., Sociology, Social Policy, Anthropology, Political Science)
  • Experience conducting ethnographic fieldwork at the doctoral level
  • Research experience in social policy and/or migration is an asset
  • The applicant must have obtained a doctoral degree within the last eight years (parents can add one additional year per child) or be in a position to obtain a doctoral degree before 1 November
  • 2 published articles in international peer-reviewed journals
  • Language skills: English plus (at least) one of the following: Arabic, French, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian or Spanish
  • Ability and interest to work in a team
  • The applicant must not have resided/been employed/been a student in Belgium for more than 24 months during the 3 years before the start of the postdoctoral contract.

Application Procedure: 

How to Apply: The selection process occurs in 2 steps.

Applications must be submitted electronically in English to mitsopro-at-uliege.be (with a copy to JM.Lafleur-at-uliege.be) by 4 June 2018 with the message titled, ‘MiTSoPro_PhD’. The following documents must be attached to the e-mail in two separate PDF files:

1) In the first file, named ‘Motivation_applicant’s last name’:

  • A motivation letter (maximum 800 words);
  • A CV with detailed information on degree results and language skills;
  • The names and contact details of two references

2) In the second file, named ‘Sample_applicant’s last name’:

  • One writing sample (e.g., essay or MA thesis chapter) in English or French demonstrating the applicant’s ability to conduct ethnographic fieldwork, relevant analytical capacities and methodological rigor (single – spaced, maximum 10,000 words. If a thesis, please indicate which chapter should be reviewed.
