We are seeking for a highly-motivated PhD student to join an international research consortium working on child malnutrition in Africa. The main research aim of the consortium is to develop and evaluate lipid-based nutrition supplement (LNS) formulations for prevention of malnutrition.

The holder of the position will pursue his/her doctoral studies full-time focusing on the development of new methods to assess child health, nutritional status and subjective well being. A successful applicant should have a Master’s degree in one of the following (or related) fields: medicine, nutrition science, public health, or sociology. Previous experience in developing countries is highly appreciated. Fluent English skills are essential and willingness to spend extended periods of time in rural Africa is a requirement.

The position is available starting from September 2009, or as agreed. Funding in a form of a personal scholarship (1900 € / month, from which the recipient pays 11 – 14% as pension and occupational accident premiums) is available in 12-month periods, for a maximum of four years. In order to receive a stipend, the chosen person will have to register as a post-graduate student at the University of Tampere. Before the scholarship period, a maximum of four months salary is available for preparation and registration of a PhD research plan. Salary during that period will be determined by the salary system of Finnish universities based on demand level 1 of the chart for teaching and research personnel (1608 € / month +  0 – 48 % personal bonus) .

    i am a paediatrician working with severely malnurished children in post conflict norhtern Uganda while lecturing in the new medical school in Gulu. I will be humbled to have this opportunity so i can build capacity to research and provide services to these groups of children in developing countries. I did my masters’ thesis on nutrition among infants born to HIV positive infants in resource limited situation.
