Scholarship Description: A position exists for a PhD research student to develop a fundamental understanding of the mechanics of composites for application to body armour and vehicle armour. The project is funded by the US Office of Naval Research. High performance composites are used increasingly to combine structural performance and impact resistance such as crash and projectile impact. However, these can be competing requirements, and there is a need to develop composites that can perform both functions. To investigate this, a combined experimental and numerical approach is needed.
