Scholarship Description: Information systems in critical care settings are increasingly used to mediate and automate work practice (i.e., data entry, paper-based analysis) to improve patient care management. Using new methodologies for understanding work, including observation and simulation of work practices, the study will consider how critical care teams use information systems during patient care planning. Collaborating with managers and workers, the study involves analyzing unintended consequences of medical errors in the use of the information system. The study is expected to result in a set of human-system interface design principles for information systems in critical care settings.
