The University of California, Berkeley is pleased to announce the Pre-Dissertation Research Grant. This grant is open for PhD international students. Grants are intended to support travel, lodging, and research-related expenditures for graduate students who are conducting research away from campus.
The Institute’s mission to support international and comparative research students at UC Berkeley, projects should be international and/or comparative in nature, and/or related to the study of languages, and/or involve substantial research outside of the United States.

Eligible candidate’s following minimum qualifications:
- This grant is intended for PhD students who have not yet advanced to candidacy by 08/15/2020.
- Preference will be given to international students who cannot apply for other sources of funding within the United States.
- Eligible Countries: Scholarships are available to students at the International level.
- Entrance Requirements: Open to any full-time, registered, UC Berkeley graduate student who has not yet obtained ABD status by the application deadline.
- Students from all departments are eligible.
- Applicants can receive a maximum of one IIS grant per year.

Eligible students must submit an application that includes:
- A description of the proposed research (up to two pages);
- A CV (up to two pages);
- A one-page budget plan;
- A list of all other sources of financial support for the academic year (including summer);
- An unofficial UC Berkeley transcript;
- One letter of reference from a faculty member, emailed directly to [email protected] (subject line: “Recommendation Letter for [Last Name, First Name], Pre-Dissertation Research Grant”).
