India Offers New Scholarship Opportunities For Afghanistan

The bilateral relationship between Afghanistan and India has taken a new shift with the later providing scholarship opportunities to the students of the former.

The OP Jindal Global University (JGU), Sonipat, Haryana has declared 100 percent scholarship for five girls and 50 percent scholarship for all the students who have come from Afghanistan to study in India.

The JGU, under its new initiative called ‘Jindal Afghanistan Scholarship and Empowerment Programme’ (JASEP), aims to provide support to the neighbour countries in terms of higher education and skill development.

Prof. C. Raj Kumar, Vice-chancellor, The OP Jindal Global University, said, “We believe education is a source of empowerment. Countries in transition like Afghanistan should significantly engage with higher education and in particular higher education of women in nation building.”

The scholarship targets talented Afghanistan students and aims to provide them with quality higher education. This opportunity comes after a group of delegates consisting of women parliamentarians and civil society members visiting the OP Jindal Global University to discuss a possible higher education opportunity for the students from Afghanistan. The discussion specifically focussed on women students.

It’s not only JGU, but there are other universities of repute, those who have enrolled students from Afghanistan. The South Asian University, New Delhi provides scholarship opportunities to students from different South Asia nations.

There are 30 students from Afghanistan in its campus. There are other universities such as Jamia Milia Islamia and Pondicherry University, those who provide scholarship opportunities for the students from the Afghanistan.

Mr. Hamid Karzai, former president, Afghanistan, while attending a seminar, organized bythe Delhi Policy Group and India Habitat Centre on “Afghanistan and neighbourhood” praised India for its constant support in developing the human capital of his country.

“India has been at the top of the list of the countries and is the front runner in providing education to Afghanistan for those in the audience who do not know that India gives us thousands scholarships every year. These are government scholarships and then India allows the Afghan Government to provide its own scholarships,” he added.
