Africa Platform of Ghent University Association (GAP) is inviting outstanding applicants to apply for Short Stay Research Fellowships for International Students. The grant is available for the academic session 2023-2024.

The studentship is designed to give for international students who have a chance to study a research degree in Belgium and aims to help them with covering some of their study expenses.

  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded to a research degree in any subject offered by the university.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following criteria:
  • You have a Master’s degree in Veterinary Medicine, final year students can also apply.
  • You feel like working in a team, in collaboration with your supervisors Prof. Siska Croubels and Prof. Mathias Devreese (Laboratory for Pharmacology and Toxicology), Prof. Gunther Antonissen (Poultry Health Sciences Chair holder), Prof. Jeroen Dewulf (Veterinary Epidemiology Unit) ), practice veterinarians, doctoral students and the laboratory staff.
  • You have a problem-solving, organized, critical and result-oriented attitude.
  • You have interpersonal skills, empathy, flexibility and a critical mind to function in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • You have communication skills such as dealing with poultry farmers and veterinary practice (company visits), conducting substantive discussions, scientific reporting and presenting in both Dutch and English.

How to Apply

  • How to Apply: In order to apply for this scholarship, the initial step is to apply for affirmation. For taking the affirmation right off, the students are required needs to pick a PhD degree coursework at the university. After being enrolled at the university, claimants should be in English or French, and the application form.  The application should be submitted by email to [email protected] in one PDF file, no later than 1 October 2023. Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered
  • Supporting Documents: To apply, please send your personal information, a cover letter in which you indicate: the period of your visit, the research group you will be affiliated with, a motivation as to how your current and future research at your home university will benefit from a research stay at Ghent, and whether this visit concerns a new type of collaboration, a research plan (research objectives, methods, and tools, a work plan for the intended visit, possible long-term cooperation plans, interdisciplinarity of the research, etc.), a budget, list of your three most important publications, your signature and the signature of the Ghent University promotor. This means that you should already have a Ghent University promotor at the application stage. If you do not at present have links with Ghent University, the online research directory can help you in your search for a promotor. You also need to submit a short motivation statement by the Ghent University promotor, and a short CV (max 2 pages), and proof of your PhD degree in an annex to the application form.
  • Admission Requirements: For taking admission, applicants must check all the entry requirements of the university.
  • Language Requirement: All seekers need to provide valid proof of the required level of Dutch at level B2 for the program.

Benefits

The fellowships consist of a grant of € 1000 + one return flight ticket, for a minimum stay of two weeks, which is meant to cover (or contribute towards) travel and accommodation costs and living expenses. This means that additional funding will need to be found in many cases – note that we will only consider additional research funding, not personal resources. The visiting scholars will be given office space and access to facilities (such as the library) as Ghent University visiting scholars.
