2013 PhD Studentships in Psychology and Neuroscience at University of St Andrews in UK

University of St Andrews is offering five fully funded studentships for PhD level. Postgraduate research studentships are available in Human Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience, Behavioral Neuroscience, Perception, Perception of Mind and Social Psychology. Eligibility:
– Successful applicants usually possess a first or good upper class second degree in psychology from a British university or its equivalent from an overseas institution.
– We also encourage applications from graduates whose initial training has been in a cognate discipline.  It should be noted that we are keen to reward results that have been achieved against a background of personal hardship or social disadvantage.
– The Master of Science Converstion to Psychology course offers a conversion route into psychology for students who hold an honours degree in a subject other than psychology.
-Overseas applicants whose first language is not English are also asked to provide evidence of competence in written and spoken English (for example, an IELTS or TOEFLscore) (e.g., IELTS ? 7.0 (including ? 7.5 writing skills)).

Scholarship Description: The project will involve the discovery and investigation of new inorganic materials as electrodes and electrolytes for lithium and sodium batteries and will be working with Professor Peter G. Bruce FRS. A background in solid state chemistry or electrochemistry would be an advantage. Two posts are available. Energy storage is more important today than at any time in human history.  The rechargeable lithium battery possesses the highest energy density of any electrochemical energy storage device.  It has revolutionised consumer electronics.  However, to make a step change in the technology and to realise a sodium-ion battery, new materials with new properties and combinations of properties are required. We shall investigate new lithium and sodium intercalation compounds and solid electrolytes for lithium and sodium batteries.

This research will contribute to the development of urgently required new strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of infections caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, one of the top ten most deadly human pathogens. This project aims to determine the molecular basis for the induction of anti-collagen antibodies in streptococcal autoimmune sequelae.

Scholarship Description: A new opportunity is available for a motivated Post-Doctoral Research Fellow to work on an exciting research programme which investigates the genetics of neurodevelopment. The project will involve the analysis of large genetic and functional genomic datasets applying state-of-the-art concepts in the field of human complex trait. Large genetic cohorts characterised with quantitative cognitive and behavioural phenotypes will be used for genetic association studies to identify risk factors for dyslexia. Transcriptome data from next generation sequencing platforms (RNA-seq) will be generated from relevant tissues and analysed in collaboration with experienced bioinformaticians to gain insight into the biological mechanisms controlling neurodevelopment. The work will involve DNA and RNA samples preparation for high-throughput genomic applications and downstream data analysis with statistical and bioinformatics approaches. You will work closely with different UK and European groups and will need to demonstrate excellent communication and teamwork skills. For this collaborative and multidisciplinary project there is scope for travel and interaction with other laboratories. You will be encouraged to develop additional lines of investigations according to your research interests.

Scholarship Description: We wish to appoint a Teaching Fellow with particular expertise in the area of American literature, but with broader interests in the field of English literature more generally. Candidates should hold a PhD in English. The successful candidate will serve as co-ordinator and lecturer on the single semester honours level module ‘American Fiction: Self and Nation, 1865-1939’ (EN4419); will contribute tutorial teaching to prehonours modules; provide lectures on various modules; and serve as supervisor for a small number of final year dissertations.
