AboutArena Stage :Under the leadership of Artistic Director Molly Smith and Managing Director Edgar Dobie, Arena Stage’s core purpose is to produce huge plays of all that is passionate, exuberant, profound, deep and dangerous in the American spirit. Arena Stage is the oldest and largest of the Washington, D.C. area’s not-for-profit producing theaters, attracting a diverse annual audience of over 350,000 mainstages.

Job Description : Design-The New Play Producing Fellowships are part of the Allen Lee Hughes Fellowship Program. Three New Play Producing Fellows will work as part of the American Voices New Play Institute and the Artistic Development Team. The New Play Producing Fellow will gain experience in producing new plays from original impulse through opening night in a fast paced and exciting environment. The Fellow will be paired with a Resident Playwright and produce all of their new play development activities, as well as other Arena Stage new play development activities including convenings on hot topics in the national new play sector. In addition, the Fellow will complete an “externship” in another organization to expand their knowledge of new work.
Fellowship Term, Compensation & Benefits: New Play Producing Fellowships are full-time and require a year-long commitment from October 2010- September 2011. From October-January, incoming Fellows will train with current Fellows. Fellows will be paid a modest stipend, and will receive health and dental benefits. Housing is not provided. Fellows will receive a small travel budget to complete externships in new play producing at other organizations around the country.

Requirements: This is not a place to begin. Grounding in the basic environment and tools of theater production is essential. Above all, candidates must possess passion for new play development and producing new works. . College degree or equivalent work experience . Experience working in professional theater and/or related fields . Producing and artistic experience . Experience working with budgets .Competitive candidates will be adept at working in a fast-paced environment; able to multi-task; posses strong attention to detail, be team players, have interest in cross-training in functional areas outside of the department, illustrate strong and effective communication and time management skills, wrestle with ideas of purpose, have strong computer skills, be curious and eager to learn, demonstrate adaptability, have a desire to see and understand the big picture, and be ready and willing to hit the ground running.
