U.S. Commercial Service Japan Internship Programme for 2016

Applications are invited for U.S. Commercial Service Japan Internship Opportunities for the year 2016. U.S. and non-U.S. citizens are eligible to apply. Individuals with dual citizenship may also apply. However, one must pass a security investigation before the projected start date of the internship cycle. A relevant major such as Economics, International Relations, and Political Science is preferred and candidates are expected to have a high level of proficiency in verbal and written English and Japanese. Priority will be given to candidates that can commit for longer periods of time, and more hours per week.

Field of Internship: Interns will have the opportunity to work with American diplomats as well as local trade professionals to gain hands-on, real-world international experience focusing on business in the U.S. Embassy environment.

Eligibility: Interns must follow the following guidelines:

  • Student must be enrolled in an academic program during the full period of their internship
  • Student must be proficient in both languages (see FAQ for details)
  • Student must be able to commit 16 hours a week during Fall/Winter/Spring cycles and work full time during the Summer cycle (exceptions made for the Fall/Winter/Spring cycles)
  • Upon selection, students must be able to pass a security clearance investigation in order to work at the Embassy.

Internship Open for International Students: The internship is open to all interested and eligible U.S. and non-U.S. citizens.

Is this paid internship? Unfortunately, the internship is unpaid.

Internship Description: The Commercial Section of the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo is looking for interns to join our team. We have 3 internship cycles with availability during each cycle. They encourage interns to apply during the cycle that best fits their schedule and clearly indicate their availability on their internship application.

Internship Duration: Please apply to the cycle that best fits your schedule.

  • Fall/Winter/Spring interns must commit to 16 hours a week while summer interns must commit to working full-time for at least two months.
  • Candidates who can work at least one-month full-time will be considered out of standard cycles for non-summer periods.
  • Winter/Spring interns need not commit the whole 5 months, but at least 2 months at the 16 hour per week or by doing at least one-month full-time.

Notification: Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted. There will be 1-2 interviews before a conditional offer is made, and online interviews can be conducted for distance candidates. Once a conditional offer is made, candidates must pass a security check that can take 1-3 months.
