­The University of Cape Town (UCT) is happy to announce two PhD fellowship opportunities in Basic and Clinical Science. This fellowship is available for Clinical as well as Non-Clinical researchers.

The Fogarty HIV-associated Tuberculosis Training Program has been established at the University of Cape Town in 2017 in partnership with Johns Hopkins University and Vanderbilt University in the US and aims to develop the next generation of research leaders in the field of HIV-associated TB at UCT.

The Fogarty HIV-associated TB Training Program (HATTP) will develop the next generation of research leaders in this high burden disease area and strategically fill gaps at UCT. South Africa has an exceptionally high burden of HIV, tuberculosis (TB), and HIV-TB co-infection.

Scholarship Description

  • Applications Deadline: Closed
  • Course Level: Fellowships are available to study PhD programme.
  • Study Subject: Fellowships are awarded in HIV-associated Tuberculosis. The five focus areas prioritized for training are Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics; Advanced Epidemiology and Modelling; Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacogenomics; Immunopathogenesis; and HIVTB Drug Hypersensitivity Reactions.
  • Scholarship Award: One Basic Scientist PhD fellowship: The funding will cover a stipend (R 250,000 per annum for 3 years, tax-free) and once-off project cost support (R 200,000)
  • One Clinician Scientist PhD fellowship: The project could be in the field of clinical, laboratory or epidemiology research. The funding will cover a stipend (R 470,000 per annum for 2 years, tax-free) and once-off project cost support (R 200,000).
  • Nationality: This fellowship is available for international students.
  • Number of Scholarships: The Program will competitively award a limited number of post-graduate fellowships and run training courses
  • Scholarship can be taken in South Africa

Eligibility for the Scholarship

  • Eligible Countries: This fellowship is available for international students.
  • Entrance Requirements: Applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • The University of Cape Town is now advertising two Fogarty PhD fellowship opportunities:
  • One Basic Scientist PhD fellowship.
  • The applicant should:
  • Hold an appropriate Masters’ degree or be completing this in 2018.
  • Propose a project in the field of HIV-associated TB or HIV-TB co-infection.
  • Have the support of the applicant’s planned PhD supervisor(s).
  • Provide evidence in the application that there is co-funding within the research group to enable the successful completion of the research.
  • Plan to conduct the research in a UCT laboratory. Non-clinician researchers in the fields of epidemiology or biostatistics are also eligible to apply for this fellowship.
  • One Clinician Scientist PhD fellowship.
  • English Language Requirements: Applicants whose first language is not English are usually required to provide evidence of proficiency in English at the higher level required by the University.
