As part of its strategic research vision, the School of Health Sciences is offering a PhD
Studentship in ‘Shoulder/Upper Limb Research’. A recent international Shoulder Rehabilitation Conference hosted by the School on the theme of ‘New Discoveries and Future
Directions’ identified several knowledge gaps and challenges particularly in relation to the
methodologies applied for the evaluation of shoulder function.

The successful applicant will
• Have an excellent understanding of Shoulder/Upper Limb function and biomechanics
• Have adequate skills (willing to further excel) in using biomechanical systems such as
EMG, 3D Motion and Force Analysis, and dynamometry
• Have desirable skills in computing and statistics and ideally have previous experience in
utilizing research software commonly used for signal processing such as Matlab
• Have a Masters degree with Distinction from a UK university (or EU equivalent) OR; a
Masters degree with Merit from a UK university including a Distinction grade for the
Dissertation in a relevant subject area (for example Sport and Exercise Science, Allied
Health, Clinical Sciences)
• Have an interest in working within a multi-disciplinary, clinical-academic environment and
demonstrate a desire to conduct the highest quality research that will impact on the care
and rehabilitation of people with Shoulder/Upper Limb pathologies
• Have an established connection with the healthcare organizations or sporting environments
(desirable)
• Have excellent written and oral communication skills in English
