The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation is a non-profit organization that was created in 1984 by the six surviving Mercury 7 astronauts. ASF provides annually more than 50 scholarships to the brightest and most talented college students in Stem fields.

Eligibility

  • Eligible Countries: the United States
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The program will award for an undergraduate course in science, technology, engineering and mathematics subjects offered by an ASF affiliated university or institution
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet:
  • An applicant must be a citizen of the United States, either native-born or naturalized
  • Must be at least a sophomore applying for their junior, or a junior applying to receive a scholarship for their senior year.
  • Students must be enrolled in one of the participating universities in the Scholarship Program.
  • Additionally, nominated students must be enrolled for both semesters as a full-time student for the ASF-supported academic year.
  • Applicants must be seeking a STEM degree with intentions to pursue research or advance their field upon completion of their final degrees.
  • Students planning to pursue a practice in professional medicine are not eligible for the scholarship. However, those intending to perform biomedical research are eligible.

How to Apply

  • How to Apply: ASF only receives nominations for the Astronaut Scholarship from its affiliated and participating universities. If a student is concerned about being nominated, they should contact a member of their university’s faculty regarding consideration. Applicants can also contact the university liaison for more details regarding the internal process.
  • Supporting Documents: Students nominated for the grant will need to assist the nominating faculty member with the following: two letters of recommendation, a personal statement, a copy of academic transcripts, a copy of the birth certificate, naturalization form, or U.S. passport to authenticate and confirm, and a C.V. or resume.
  • Entry Requirements: Must be nominated by faculty at an ASF affiliated university or institution
  • Language Requirement: Should have a good knowledge of the English language (speaking, writing, and reading)

Benefits

If a student is granted the Astronaut Scholarship the beneficiary will receive a scholarship up to $10,000, a paid trip to ASF’s Innovators Weekend in the fall, and Life-long engagement with the astronauts, Astronaut Scholar alumni, and the Foundation.
